Hundreds Feared Dead After a Boat Carrying Migrants Capsizes Near Egypt

The prosecution also ordered the release of 160 rescued survivors of the capsized boat, including 117 Egyptians and 43 foreigners.

Survivors said up to 450 migrants were on board the fishing vessel when it sank about 12km off the coast of Rosetta, an Egyptian Mediterranean port city, on Wednesday morning. According to the military, 163 survivors have been rescued.

Dozens of people have died and officials fear hundreds more have been lost at sea after a boat carrying 600 migrants capsized off the north Egyptian coast, as world leaders gathered at a summit in NY to discuss the refugee crisis.

A day later, the Egyptian authorities arrested four members of the capsized boat crew over human trafficking charges, while a senior official announced that an anti-illegal immigration bill has been presented by the government to the parliament for approval.

Egyptian authorities, meanwhile, arrested four people in connection with the incident and issued arrest warrants for five more.

"Therefore, Egypt became an appealing destination for smugglers and refugees as a reasonable alternative for its long coastline and being relatively stable, near Europe (mainly Italy, Greece and Cyprus) and open to African and Arab nations", Elhusseini said. Over 150 people have been rescued so far.

An initial breakdown of the nationalities of the migrants showed that they included 111 Egyptians, mostly teenagers and men in their 20s, said Mr Sultan, the Beheira governor.

Some 1.3 million migrants reached Europe's shores past year fleeing war and economic hardship, prompting bitter rows among European countries over how to share responsibility.

More than 12,000 migrants arrived in Italy from Egypt between January and September, compared to 7,000 in the same period past year.

If they survive the perilous maritime journey, migrants this year face much tougher European Union border controls.

Many survivors are now being held in police custody. Some of those rescued after suffering injuries were taken to hospitals, where they lie handcuffed to beds under police guard.

Survivors and relatives blamed traffickers for overloading the boat but also accused authorities of reacting slowly to the pre-dawn disaster. He said he was among around 100 people in a hold used to store fish when the vessel capsized. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.

The International Organisation for Migration said the boat carried 350 migrants, but cautioned that the figure was an estimate, according to spokesman Joel A Millman. Numerous dead, he explained, were women and children who could not swim.

"Families know that they will not be sent back", leading boys as young as 12 to make the trip, Di Giacomo said.

It is not yet confirmed by officials but the capsized boat was believed to be going to Italy.

The vessel was carrying in total between 400 and 600 people.

Smugglers in the region reportedly charge refugees about 35,000 pounds, almost $4,000, each for the perilous journey to Europe. He said locals paid up to $4,000 to risk their lives in hope of a new start in Europe.
