After his team was crushed by the Cardinals on Monday night, Jets coach Todd Bowles told reporters that Ryan Fitzpatrick remained his starting quarterback heading into Week 7.
At the National Football League fall meetings in Houston on Wednesday, Jets owner Woody Johnson says it was coach Todd Bowles' decision and he is "behind the coach 100 percent".
The Jets have lost four straight, tumbling to a 1-5 record and teetering toward irrelevancy. Bowles said a decision would be made when he meets with assistant coaches and general manager Mike Maccagnan on Tuesday night. He also praised Geno Smith, who relieved Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter and completed 4 of 6 passes for 31 yards and threw an interception in his only series.
No matter what they paid Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets need to consider all the options at quarterback.
"I'll cross that bridge when I get to it", Bowles said.
Four consecutive losses by a combined score of 110-36 with an offense that has produced three touchdowns in the last three games and a defense that has vastly underachieved commensurate to the talent assembled are enough to make Jets fans want to tear everything up and start over.
Fitzpatrick is signed only through the end of the season, as is Smith.
Sure, they replaced him with backup Geno Smith in Monday night's beatdown by the Cardinals, but that was just a one-game thing.
As far as Petty and/or Hackenberg, Bowles said it's too early to think about using either. That Petty is a fourth-round draft pick from two years ago and Hackenberg a second-rounder this year only emphasizes how much the Jets are losing with them on the sideline - it's not their fault, but imagine who else could be playing in their place? As little as Smith showed, getting stripped for a fumble that was recovered by his offensive line but getting picked off on the ensuing play, he was nowhere near as bad as Fitzpatrick.
"It's possible", he said.
Of Hackenberg, he said: "Hackenberg's been throwing the ball with a lot more confidence on the scout teams and he's been getting some valuable experience". "We've just got to figure it out, and we've got to figure it out fast". Neither has ever appeared in an National Football League regular season game. We're trying to win a ballgame. "We've got to have a quick turnaround and we've got to play better".
