At least 20 people are feared dead and several others grievously injured after a heavily-loaded truck ran into a crowd outside the Yerpedu Mandal police station near Tirupati of Andhra Pradesh on Friday afternoon. Hospital sources suggest that the toll is likely to go up since some of the injured are in critical condition. They were staging a protest before the police station demanding action against illegal transportation of sand from their areas, when the mishap took place. The injured were shifted to Ruia Hospital and Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati and CHC Hospital in Srikalahasti.
Yerpedu is at a "T" junction, leading to Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri towns and the accident spot is close to this junction. The police believe 10 people died on the spot while two died on the way to a hospital.
At least 14 persons waiting outside the police station at Yerpedu were run over by the wayward truck.
Andhra Pradesh Cabinet expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased. He also ordered the officials to complete the post mortem formalities of the victims and release their bodies to their respective families as soon as possible.
Prime Minister has expressed greaf over the incident.
