Shoemaker hasn't made it through 6 innings in any of his three starts in 2017, though he limited the damage to only 2 runs in two of his three outings (he gave up 6 ER over 4.1 IP against Seattle in his worst outing of 2017).
After hitting his first home run for Houston in 12½ years, Carlos Beltran was asked to recall the last time he went deep for the Astros.
"I think he's challenged him, which is something that you have to do with Dallas", Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "I swear to God. Playing against this team past year when I was with Texas (Rangers), I know this team is very hungry to go out there and be in the playoffs again", Beltran said.
Beltran's previous homer for Houston came on October 17, 2004, in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series against St. Louis, capping a postseason in which he hit eight homers with 14 RBIs in 12 games.
"I don't get caught up in homers", he said.
Morton threw five scoreless innings surrendering five hits and two walks while accumulating three more punch-outs in the 3-0 win.
"He pitched a great game", Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Right now, we just mixing and matching a little bit until some of our guys get comfortable".
The last time McCullers faced the Angels was on 7/22/16, a game in which he struck out Mike Trout swinging 3 times.
Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa (hand) is back in the lineup for Thursday afternoon's meeting with the Los Angeles Angels.
As Trout walked away, the fans started laughing hysterically as Orbit had pinned a "I ❤️ THE ASTROS" sign on the back of Trout's jersey.
Los Angeles failed to score more than three runs in a contest during a six-game slide before breaking out briefly in Tuesday's 5-2 triumph, which featured a three-run homer by Albert Pujols.
Beltran put Houston ahead with his first-inning homer. But they were left stranded as Shoemaker struck out Marwin Gonzalez as the first of 10 straight Astros he retired. Morton had runners every inning and even the bases loaded in the second, yet he never broke to allow any runs to cross the plate.
McCullers was lifted after walking consecutive batters with two outs in the seventh inning.
JC Ramirez (2-2) allowed three runs on six hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Jesse Chavez pitched well but didn't receive any offensive support from his Los Angeles Angels teammates on April 17.
Astros: Houston placed right-handed reliever Jandel Gustave on the 10-day DL with tightness in his right forearm and called up right-hander James Hoyt to take his spot on the roster.
Chris Devenski followed Morton with two flawless innings, Luke Gregerson threw a ideal eighth and Ken Giles pitched the ninth for his third save. "Cam's going to get, obviously, the lion's share of playing time in left field. Especially in a tight situation like that, so it was good". "I'm glad we came out with a win". We just couldn't come up with the big hit. "Last two games haven't worked our way, but we put ourselves in position to have a chance".
Angels: Alex Meyer will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday to make his first start of the season when the Angels open a four-game series against Toronto. Right-hander Joe Musgrove (1-0, 4.09 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the Astros. McCullers is 2-1 with a 2.09 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.
