1 killed in reported Wisconsin tornado; 25 hurt

Dale Daily said Wednesday that he heard the warning siren sound about a half-hour before the tornado hit Prairie Lake Estate Mobile Park near Chetek Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service in Norman was in Elk City surveying the damage to determine the category of Tuesday's tornado.

Danny Ringer, chaplain with the Elk City Fire Department, says that tornado killed 53-year-old Bo Mikles.

About 40 mobile homes were destroyed in the Barron County neighborhood, said Tod Pritchard, another spokesperson.

Elk City, Oklahoma bore the brunt of the damage, with dozens of homes visibly destroyed after a tornado ripped through the small city, an NBC affiliate station reported. "And so I would say there was probably six to eight trailers in a row but there's nothing there but debris", said the sheriff for Barron County, Chris Fitzgerald.

Emergency crews are assessing the damage, but Fitzgerald estimates the damages to be in the millions. The National Weather Service said spotters reported a tornado four miles northwest of Chetek at 5:35 p.m., and another five miles southwest of Weyerhaeuser at 6:15 p.m.

The south side of Elk City was hit hardest by one storm, said Mayor Bill Helton.

Numerous homes at the Prairie Lakes Estates trailer park were destroyed. Several cattle injures were also reported.

Other tornadoes in western Oklahoma and the eastern Texas Panhandle have downed power lines and utility poles, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Governor Scott Walker on Wednesday afternoon, May 17th toured the damage after a deadly tornado near Chetek Tuesday.

People were still coming in at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and he didn't yet have an accurate number of how many needed help.

Sheriff's dispatchers say they're too busy to provide details.

A mobile home is a particularly risky place to be during a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

On the other hand, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, says there is a greater risk of tornadoes arising in the western part of the state which will also get to the Panhandle of the mighty Texas.

There is a threat of strong thunderstorms with possible tornadoes in the nation's midsection.

In a special report, a major storm rages from the southern portion of the country to the northern lakes on Tuesday and even took two lives in the state of Wisconsin and Oklahoma.
