4 charged in fraternity pledge hazing death to plead guilty

Four former Baruch College fraternity brothers in NY pleaded guilty on Monday to the 2013 death of Pi Delta Psi pledge Chun "Michael" Deng in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania.

Kenny Kwan, 28, Charles Lai, 26, Raymond Lam, 23, and Sheldon Wong, 24, pled guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter as accomplices and Hindering Apprehension for concealing or destroying evidence for their respective roles in the December 2013 death and ensuing attempt at hiding their crimes.

Baruch College, in Manhattan, New York, has since banned the Pi Delta Psi fraternity from its campus.

According to police, the Pi Delta Psi fraternity was conducting a ritual outdoors called the "glass ceiling" with new pledges.

Police say in December 2013, Pi Delta Psi fraternity members physically abused Deng, then tried to cover it up as the 19-year-old lay dying in their rented house in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, about 100 miles west of NY.

Two hours would pass before Michael saw a doctor, police allege.

Forensic analysis determined the delay in treatment "significantly contributed to the death of Mr. Deng" and resulted in neurogenic shock, police said.

The four defendants who pleaded guilty to felony manslaughter and hindering apprehension charges Monday had been charged with third-degree murder.

Prosecutors had also charged the fraternity with those same seven counts, according to the presentment.

The murder trial against the national fraternity is scheduled to begin in November.

CNN reached out to the attorneys for the other three men, but did not hear back.

"The object of the ritual is to get through a line of brothers while fraternity members shove and take the pledges down and resist the pledge from getting through the line", the Pocono Mountain Regional Police said in a statement in 2015.

Police said "Deng was [tackled] and then was complaining about his head hurting".

Baruch freshman Chun Hsien "Michael" Deng died in 2013 after he was injured during a Pi Delta Psi fraternity ritual, officials said.

Kwan, Lai, Lam, and Wong join a fifth defendant, Ka-Wing Yuen, in pleading guilty to charges related to Deng's death.

They are set for sentencing in December and face 22 to 36 months in prison, according to the Associated Press. Court records confirm the charges against fraternity president Daniel Li, 25, have been reduced, but his case remains unresolved.

The guilty pleas come as almost two-dozen members of a Penn State University fraternity face criminal charges in another case involving a pledge who fatally fell down stairs during an alcohol-fueled event in February.
