ACLU Files to Get Comey's Memo on Trump Conversation

Meanwhile in Congress, the House Oversight Committee invited Comey to testify on his conversations with the president.

The Justice Department later appointed a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director as special counsel to examine possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian meddling in last year's election, which Heitkamp called a "very important step, and one which I've called for".

The central question is whether Trump's reported conversation and statements to Comey constitute an obstruction of justice.

The letter specifically requests any "recordings, transcripts, notes, summaries, and memoranda" related to conversations between Comey and Trump. The investigation goes well beyond Flynn, Manafort and a possible American connection, to include how Russian intelligence services carried out the campaign of fake news and leaking hacked emails that intelligence officials say was meant to hurt Hillary Clinton and benefit Donald Trump.

Striking a defiant stance, he added: "You can't let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams".

President Donald Trump asked then-FBI director James Comey to end the investigation into ties between former national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russian Federation, according to a memo written by Comey.

"A lot of people don't do that", the Maryland Democrat said.

Chaffetz said he nonetheless thought that Comey's firing should be investigated.

"What surprises me is that they are shaking up the domestic political situation using anti-Russian slogans", Putin said.

The memo could border on "the legal definition of obstruction of justice", he said.

The White House has denied that Trump did anything wrong in his meeting with Lavrov, which was also attended by Kislyak.

Cramer said a special prosecutor is "unnecessary at this point, if ever". Dianne Feinstein of California sent the letter to the Justice Department and the White House on Wednesday.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, said simply, "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House".

"We invite you to testify at a public hearing of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary regarding the circumstances of your termination as director of the FBI and your interactions with Trump and Obama administration officials regarding the FBI's Russian Federation investigation and Clinton email investigation", they wrote. They're also asking whether Comey memorialized any other conversations during the Obama presidency or whether he only chose to take notes about Trump.

In Washington, Republican and Democratic lawmakers said they wanted to see the Comey memo.

This is disturbing stuff that requires the immediate attention of Congress, and the earliest possible testimony by Comey - in public session.
