Arsene Wenger not giving up on top-four finish

The Gunners ran out 2-0 winners at St Mary's; Sanchez and Olivier Giroud getting the goals to move Arsenal back fifth in the Premier League table.

An very bad run of form from January until early April had seriously threatened to end Arsene Wenger's record of securing a top four finish in every season he has had at Arsenal.

"Overall it was a very convincing win", explained the Arsenal manager. Liverpool have two games left, West Ham away for Liverpool is tough but if they win there then I expect them to limp over the line.

The second came in the closing stages as substitute Giroud made certain of the points, heading home Ramsey's nod back across the box after more good work from Sanchez. That support always helps, we know that, and it's important for us to play well in order to deserve any plaudits we get - that is certainly our intention. They were certainly not playing like a team that had to win the match to keep their faint top-four hopes alive.

"That's Alexis, he's a player who never gives up", said Wenger.

"We still feel we could finish eighth, but we know everything has to go for us", Hughes added.

Ahead of the game, Arsene Wenger has been speaking to Arsenal.com and he's offered a team news and injury update including the latest on Laurent Koscielny and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. "In the second half we took over and created many opportunities to score".

"That's Alexis", Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "We know we can only win our games, and we had a strong performance on Sunday [against Manchester United] and a strong performance today, so let's just continue".

"Recently we shot ourselves in the foot against Tottenham, because we did not get any points and obviously we left ourselves in the situation where we have to keep winning every game", said Cech. It's a good team, a team that likes to play.

Sanchez's strike was his 20th Premier League goal of the campaign, the first time he has reached that landmark since joining from Barcelona. The Potters have struggled at home too, lost two and drawn one of their last four games at the Bet365 Stadium, and Arsenal will fancy their chances as a result.
