Cabinet meeting in Kotel tunnels marks 50 years of reunification

It would stop at the Dung Gate entrance to the Old City near the Western Wall, traversing some 1.4 kilometres (less than a mile).

Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Western Wall tunnels in Jerusalem, before the start of a special weekly cabinet meeting marking the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification, on May 28, 2017.

A senior Palestinian official has said Israel's convening a cabinet meeting in the tunnels under the al-Aqsa compound is a "provocation." .

After capturing the Old City and East Jerusalem, Israel annexed them, declaring all of Jerusalem the undivided, eternal capital of Israel and notes that only under Israeli rule have the Holy Sites been open to all religions.

"The Israeli government has made a decision to mark 50 years of occupation and the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan by sending a clear message to the Palestinian people that the systematic violations of their inalienable rights are going to continue", Erekat said.

Israeli infrastructure projects in east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank draw harsh criticism from the Palestinians and many in the global community.

Al-Ayyam explained the approved plan involves the installation of a cable vehicle that would link a former railway station in West Jerusalem to the Moroccan (Dung) Gates of Jerusalem's Old City, located near the Western Wall and Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Israeli cabinet approved a plan to "Judaize" Jerusalem's Old City.

The cable vehicle project has been discussed for several years, with Israeli officials saying it is needed to ease access to the heavily visited Western Wall.

It later annexed East Jerusalem and declared it as part of its "eternal and indivisible capital", a move that has never been recognized by the global community. Over the next few days, 17 Israelis and 100 Palestinians were killed in intense fighting.
