Cornyn among 4 interviewing for FBI director

Cornyn, who has served as a senator since 2002, says while he won't be filling the position, he believes the country "needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI Director".

"I have called repeatedly on the attorney general to appoint a special counsel to fully and fairly conduct the investigation", Cornyn said on the Senate floor in March 2016.

At this point, it's far from a sure-thing strategy - while there is no shortage of Republicans who have expressed problems with how and when James Comey was sacked from the FBI's top spot, there has been no rush to embrace Democratic calls for a special counsel. John Cornyn, South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers and former New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

A petition signed by some students expressed opposition to Cornyn's votes for DeVos' and Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmations, among other issues.

Comey wrote the memo after he met in the Oval Office with Trump, the day after the president fired Flynn on February 14 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations previous year with Russia's ambassador, Sergei Kislyak.

When asked whether Sessions involvement with the search raised any concerns - since Sessions had recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation - Cornyn said he did not see any conflict.

And in a curious development, he lacked the support of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is pushing for Judge Merrick Garland to replace Comey.

Senators return to work Monday afternoon and will consider nominations throughout the week to fill out several senior positions in the Trump administration, including Rachel Brand to be associate attorney general, the third-ranking position at the Justice Department.

They are among more than a dozen candidates Trump is considering.

The Senate intelligence committee invited Comey to testify and sought his memos, while the Senate judiciary committee requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation memos as well as any possible tapes from the White House in response to Trump's tweet last week suggesting he had taped conversations with Comey. If confirmed, his role as Senate Majority Whip would be up for grabs.

"I don't think we're there yet", Arizona Sen.

Sen. John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming, said he thought Cornyn "would have been a great choice". Of course, the ouster would have been viewed as an attempt to squelch an ongoing investigation, just as Trump's firing of Comey clearly was.
