Court reviews how man got early jail release before slayings

More than 60 guns were seized Friday from the home of the OH man who shot and killed three people at a nursing home. The 43-year-old had an extensive history of violence otherwise: Marlina Medrano, his ex-girlfriend, had sought multiple protective orders against Hartless after domestic violence incidents.

Roughly six weeks later, Hartless entered the Pine Kirk Care Center and killed Medrano along with nurse's aide Cindy Krantz, 48, and Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario, 36.

A search warrant was executed at his home on Oakland Avenue in Utica.

The Advocate obtained a letter Medrano submitted to the court before Hartless' sentencing that said she still loved him and never meant for him to go to jail. Of those 64 guns, there were 21 shotguns, 20 rifles, 18 handguns, three airguns and the rest were not specified. That case was under review May 12, for the filing of formal charges, when Hartless killed her and the others. A judge admits "mistakes were made" and says he will review how similar cases are handled.

Hartless was not allowed to own a firearm in wake of a 2010 felony conviction for abduction, according to the Advocate.

Authorities in OH are piecing together the events that led up to a nursing home shooting that left four people dead including the suspected gunman.

"I am not trying to validate why he acted the way he did", she wrote. A memorial service is planned Wednesday for Krantz.

Funerals are scheduled Friday for Medrano and Saturday for DiSario.
