Draisaitl hat trick keeps Oilers alive against Anaheim

The Edmonton Oilers avoided elimination in Game 6 with a resounding 7-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at home Sunday.

Talbot ended up with 60 on the night, a franchise record in postseason, but the Oilers lost in double overtime. Or Draisaitl's hat-trick. But they will be at the Honda Center for game seven, shoving aside the crushing overtime defeat in Game 5 in Anaheim.

Ryan Johansen - Nashville's first-line centre had a goal and an assist in a series-clinching 3-1 Game Six win against St. Louis. Draisaitl has made it a fair fight. "Everyone knows how good he is in here".

As Leon Draisaitl was staring at the Duck celebration on the bench, Connor McDavid was there to tap him on the shoulder and tell him "Let's go".

Who knew he was capable of a five-point outing? He also became the first Oilers' player with a postseason hat trick since 2000. This despite the fact that Draisaitl notched just one less goal (29) than McDavid during the regular season, and his 77 total points landed him eighth in the National Hockey League scoring race. He beats them up for fun.

"I, uh, don't think so".

"Guess so, the season was on the line", he said. Andrej Sekera was injured on a hit from Getzlaf, while Oscar Klefbom left the game after blocking a Cam Fowler shot. We had to take today and heal our bodies and our mind. They did it with the end of their season looming large.

Things definitely got going for Getzlaf after the Ducks earned a crucial Game 3 win in Edmonton that came on the heels of consecutive home losses to start the second-round series. We need to respond the same way we did then.

"He has a good feeling for when he needs to stand up in the locker room and say something", Ducks forward Rickard Rakell said before Game 5. Webbed foot to the neck of the inexperienced Oilers, now down 3-2 in the series. "As a group, we didn't handle the puck".

Anaheim Ducks' Cam Fowler (4) controls the puck as Edmonton Oilers' goalie Cam Talbot (33) looks for the shot and Eric Gryba (62) defends during the first period in Game 6 of a second-round NHL hockey playoff series in Edmonton, Alberta, Sunday, May 7, 2017. But it won't be lost to nervousness or inexperience or lack of preparation. What matters now is that his teammates rose up and obliterated a very strong Anaheim club that won the Pacific Division and seemed to have gained a mental edge over Edmonton less than 48 hours earlier. It won't be because they're scared of the big stage. The Oilers have proved in this series and these playoffs that they can revel in the big moment. The Ducks now hold a 3-2 series lead and will be heading back to Edmonton Sunday night to try and close out the series, but if the game is like the rest these two teams have played, it won't be easy.

In 2016, it was Nashville in the first round; in 2015, Chicago in the third round; in 2014, Los Angeles in the second round.

"Everything. They score on basically the first three chances to score".

"I think everyone is aware of their history but it's a new series, a new year, a new playoff run", said Draisaitl.

And an appreciation that he has the power to lead the Ducks as far as they want go.

Just as bad, if not worse, is their work in a Game 6.

"He's a great player".

The Oilers said all the right things about shaking off Friday's devastating loss by the time they gathered Sunday morning at Rogers Place. "We have to make sure we do that on Wednesday".

"The big test is coming up", Oilers coach Todd McLellan said.

Reporter: "Can this team embrace a Game 7 the way it should be embraced?"

Talbot acknowledged his own frustration over the non-call but said: "At the same time, we had a 3-nothing lead with 3 1/2 minutes to go. It's hard to argue with that". Nobody's saying McDavid and Draisaitl are on that level yet, but the mere presence of both of them as a potentially dynamic duo makes the Oilers risky.

The Ducks have been on their heels at the outset of games all series.
