Fewer insured under GOP bill

"When they run in 2018, they are going to want to say that they lowered average premiums".

AMA expressed dismay that the House-passed version offered nothing new to patients, and also its concern for those who will be without health insurance. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently projected that the revised legislation would result in 23 million more uninsured Americans over a decade (2017-2026) but would cut the deficit by $119 billion.

The bill is expected to lead to 23 million more people becoming uninsured by 2026 than would be the case if Obamacare remained intact.

The Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday released its long-awaited updated report on the GOP's healthcare bill. But without that support, insurers say they will have to significantly hike premiums to make up for the cost-sharing these customers will no longer be able to afford.

"Over time, it would become more hard for less healthy people (including people with pre-existing medical conditions) in those states to purchase insurance because their premiums would continue to increase rapidly", the CBO wrote.

In a late compromise, House GOP conservatives and moderates struck a deal that would let states get federal waivers to permit insurers to charge higher premiums to some people in poor health, and to ignore the standard set of benefits required by Obama's statute.

One such benefit now mandated for coverage is maternity care.

While the report notes that children do not spend as much money on health care as adults because they generally stay healthier, it also underscores the disturbing consequences the Medicaid cuts would have on kids. Another change would allow states to decide whether to require insurers to cover health benefits such as maternity care and prescription drugs that are mandatory under current law.

According to Ryan and leading Republicans who helped write the AHCA, the high-risk pools will ensure that those with preexisting conditions do not face significantly higher premiums.

"The CBO was wrong when they analyzed Obamacare's effect on cost and coverage", Price said of the agency's report on Obama's law, "and they are wrong again". But premiums will likely never be lower than they are today, considering the trend in health cares costs.

The Republicans' proposed Obamacare replacement, the American Health Care Act, has alienated a powerful constituency group: seniors. "Twenty-three million Americans would lose coverage under this sorry excuse for a replacement for the Affordable Care Act".

In a statement to North Country Public Radio, Stefanik's spokesman said the congresswoman is "encouraged" by some of the CBO findings - specifically, that the bill would lower taxes and reduce federal deficits.

Miller said that passage of the bill "would have a severe impact on women's health care and their families' economic stability".

"We are writing our own health care bill in the Senate and I believe we need to focus on enhancing the refundable tax credits for low-income individuals, ensuring that reforms to Medicaid work for providers and those who rely on the program, and making sure that those with chronic illnesses and pre-existing conditions have access to affordable health coverage", said Hoeven, who added that Obamacare has "raised costs and limited health care choices".
