French ex-PM wants to join Macron's party

President Donald Trump congratulated the "people of France on their successful presidential election".

After he congratulated him for his election that crowns his political career, the King pointed out that through this election, the French people, faithful to their country's noble values, have made "the choice of progress, openness and confidence in the future".

Chinese President Xi Jinping had sent a congratulatory message to Macron, Geng said at a daily press briefing.

Macron won the presidency with 66 percent of the votes cast for a candidate, but the election also had a high number of blank or spoiled votes and an unusually low turnout.

The abstention rate was 25.44 percent compared with a rate of 22.23 percent during the first round of the election on April 23.

Macron who defends an "open" France "faithful to its values" also promised that his country has to "take responsibility" and welcome refugees in cooperation with other European Union member states.

Amid a sea of red, white, and blue tricolor flags at a victory party outside the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris on May 7, Macron said the country was turning a page in its history and pledged to the thousands in attendance to defend France and Europe and "rebuild links between Europe and its citizens".

"I will fight the divisions that undermine France", he added in a nod to the 11 million votes Le Pen received, a record for the far-right leader.

"I am happy with the result of Emmanuel Macron being elected president, which constitutes a veritable relief for all our nation and for the Jewish community of France", Joel Mergui, the president of the Consistoire, wrote Sunday evening in a statement by his group, which is responsible for providing religious services to Jews.

On the financial front, European stock markets edged down in early trading as investors had been widely expecting Macron's victory.

Trump had previously expressed support for Marine Le Pen because she was "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France".

In the wake of the first round vote, pro-traditional family group Manif Pour Tous, who organised mass protests against same-sex marriage, condemned Macron, calling him the "anti-family" candidate.

Macron was endorsed by the overwhelming majority of French politicians, many European leaders, and by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Though Macron's victory is considered positive for the region's economy and the euro currency, stocks had risen strongly in the previous two weeks on expectations of his win.
