Ian Poulter to compete at PGA Championship

Kim also becomes the second Korean golfer to win here at The Players Championship.

Si Woo Kim has set his sights on making a Presidents Cup debut this autumn after a career-changing victory at the Players Championship.

Poulter's tie for second was his best result at THE PLAYERS since he finished runner-up alone behind victor Henrik Stenson in 2009, as well as his best result on the PGA TOUR since he finished second at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions on November 3, 2013.

Who is Si Woo Kim? Viewers also observed the 21-year-old clutching his back on multiple occasions, attempting to stay loose throughout the day.

On a windy afternoon at the TPC Sawgrass, where anything can go wrong without notice, Kim was the only player to go bogey-free in the final round that derailed everyone else in a hopeless pursuit of him.

All that could stop him was the final two holes, when he had a two-shot lead and faced a tee shot to an island green and then a closing hole with water all the way down the left side.

"I kind of got close there on 11 once I made birdie, and obviously, I wanted to try and put a little bit more pressure on, but it was tough to get it close", he said. "He's just so mentally strong for 21 that you can't really believe that he's 21".

Kim hit the 17th green and two-putted from 45 feet, and he smashed another drive right down the middle.

The only drama at the end came from Ian Poulter, who was happy just to be here.

Poulter, who three weeks ago thought he had lost his PGA Tour card after falling to 197th in the world rankings, is delighted with his week's work and is now hoping to kick on. He was the only player to seriously challenge Kim until he ran out of holes, and then it was a matter of finishing second.

Ian Poulter of England (71) and second-round co-leader Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa (73) tied for second at 281.

"I think it was hard to kind of get it close, and obviously, the opportunities on the back nine were 11 - I hit a decent shot into 10 and had a decent look there, but took advantage of 11", Poulter explained. "And I'm very glad I could practice with him". Bogeys on the 12 and 18 holes were his unraveling. Remarkably, Kim never did.

Holmes finished with an 8 on the par-3 17th hole, when he hit two shots into the water and four-putted, and doubled the final hole when he needed three shots to reach the green and took three putts.

Given new life on the golf course, Poulter embraced a game that had been confounding him. And he played like someone that was doing it for five or six years, like it was just another round of golf. "He took advantage of it, and you can see how good of a player he is".

The excitement, good and bad, came from everyone else.

Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello made Players history, producing an astonishing final three holes to finish in a tie for fourth with Kyle Stanley.

2017 The Players Champion. Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson both had won here before.

As for the victor?

Si Woo Kim's second PGA Tour win at the Players Championship landed one Irish punter an absolute fortune. He has gone over $1.25 million for the year. Along with title and money comes a five-year exemption on Tour and three-year exemption to play at the Masters.

You might think after winning The Players Championship, especially after winning the championship as the youngest player ever, you'd be ready to go big and celebrate.

Eleven times he either failed to qualify for the weekend or withdrew.

Compatriot Sang Moon Bae - also a two-time victor on the PGA Tour - is now serving two years of mandatory military service. He wasn't able to join the PGA Tour at that time since he wasn't 18 years old, and had to spend two years on the developmental tour before becoming a member.
