Kushner, Russian ambassador discussed setting up secret communications channel

The head of Russian state-owned Vnesheconombank, Sergei Nikolaevich Gorkov, a trained intelligence officer whom Putin appointed, met Kushner at Trump Tower in December.

Trump has denied any collusion, calling the probe "the greatest witch hunt" in American political history.

The report will likely put Mr Kushner, who is now a senior White House adviser, under heightened scrutiny in the investigations into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

At this time, Kushner is not regarded as a formal target of the probe.

It is unclear why Kushner and Trump's team so direly needed a secret communications channel to the Kremlin, though given the near-daily attempts by Trump confidants to obscure or downplay their Russian connections, the answer may be unsavory.

Earlier this week it was reported that the FBI was investigating his contacts with Russian officials.

Also at the meeting was Michael Flynn, the national security adviser who was sacked by Trump just 24 days into the job after it was revealed that Flynn lied about speaking with the Russian ambassador on the day then-President Barack Obama announced sanctions against Russia for interfering in the 2016 election.

Caveat: His lawyer said it was a mistake, and Kushner corrected it after the New York Times reported it.

Also, Reuters has reported that Mr Kushner had at least three previously undisclosed contacts with Mr Kislyak during and after the 2016 campaign.

Ex-Trump campaign associates Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Carter Page are active subjects of the investigation. "He has no recollection of the calls as described", Gorelick said in a statement to CNN.

She said that Mr Kushner had "thousands of calls" during the presidential campaign for his father-in-law, adding: 'We have asked (Reuters) for the dates of such alleged calls so we may look into it and respond, but we have not received such information'.

According to The Washington Post, the Russian Ambassador was alarmed by such a proposal from Kushner, who is now the senior most advisor to President Trump and has played a key role in his trips to Saudi Arabia and Israel and Palestine. Kushner's meeting with Kislyak at Trump Tower a year ago was eventually disclosed by the White House in March.

He warned that "Russia is a dark cloud hanging over this administration" and urged the Trump White House to cooperate with the Russian Federation investigations because "they have to understand this administration is under siege, and will be, in terms of public opinion, and in terms of the law, until all these questions are answered".

Controversy has engulfed Trump since he fired FBI Director James Comey on May 9 as Comey oversaw an investigation into possible collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Trump has called the Russian Federation inquiry a "witch hunt" and the talk of a collusion "a total hoax", although he also has hedged his denials when it comes to those around him. "I'm not talking about anything else".

Hennessey, echoing the DNC, also questioned to what degree the president may have been aware of Kushner's reported actions. Former President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russian Federation after it seized Crimea and started supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

The White House declined to comment. -Russian economic relations, six of the sources said.

This hasn't been a good week for Jared Kushner.

USA intelligence agencies concluded in January that Moscow tried to sway the November vote in Trump's favor.

Comey's actions based on what he knew was Russian disinformation offer a stark example of the way Russian interference impacted the decisions of the highest-level USA officials during the 2016 campaign.
