Led Coalition Strikes Pro-Syrian Government Forces

The United States military has carried out an air strike against forces supported by the Syrian Government that posed a threat to US-coalition fighters in the country's south, USA officials say.

'You can not consider the US-led coalition air strike against pro-government forces on Thursday an accident or a mistake anymore.

Officials from the US -led coalition attempted to use a hotline established with the Russians to warn the Syrian government to remove the forces from near the coalition base.

There is a Syrian regime base nearby, the official said, adding that forces there are equipping to handle about a battalion's worth of troops. He was asked if the airstrike represented an increase in the US role in the Syrian war.

United States warplanes have struck Syrian pro-regime forces in a mission to protect British and American soldiers in the country's southeast. Each time USA forces attack the Syrian government and their allies, it becomes more likely that someone on their side will retaliate against USA forces in Syria or Iraq, and before we know it we could be mired in fighting against several new enemies that we didn't have before.

A deadly combination of human error, bad intelligence and an increasingly complicated battlefield led to the mistaken bombing of Syrian government troops by American and coalition aircraft in September.

Syria on Friday (May 19) condemned a US-led coalition strike on pro-government forces as a "brazen attack" and said it would "not be intimidated" after the surprise assault.

It also contains a key highway from Baghdad to Damascus that Iran has used to supply weapons to Syrian forces.

Syrian ally Russian Federation also denounced the US-led strike as "unacceptable".

America has been militarily involved in Syria since 2014 but has for the most part avoided engaging directly in the country's civil war.

One of the defense officials - who, like the others, spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal details that the Pentagon had yet to make public - said that the United States acted to stop an advance of pro-regime forces toward Tanf.

The statement said the USA claims that they had warned the forces from advancing before firing were completely rejected.

The Syrian military official said that attempts to justify this attack by claiming that the targeted troops did not respond to the warning not to advance are "categorically rejected".

"It (Thursday's strike) is utterly unacceptable and a violation of Syria's sovereignty".

In a statement on Twitter, Operation Inherent Resolve said the Russians attempted to get the convoy to turn back.

The zone was set up around al-Tanf, an army base where forces are training Syrian militias, CBS News reports.

Elsewhere in Syria on May 18, IS attacked several government-held villages in central Syria, capturing at least one of them. The Thursday strikes are the most direct attack against the Syrian military so far.
