Mobile Digits service will officially launch on May 31st

Throughout the beta testing period, T-Mo says most customers primarily used Digits for messaging from their PCs and tablets, while others found that having multiple devices ring with the same phone number was useful.

In fact, T-Mobile is announcing on Thursday that Digits will be made available to everyone beginning May 31st, and every single subscriber will have his or her phone number transformed into a Digits number for free. Recent Samsung phones and the LG G5 have native integration for Digits in their existing dialers - other devices, such as the iPhone, will have to use the Digits app to place phone calls and manage their Digits lines.

T-Mobile's Digits app requires two-factor authentication, meaning customers must enter a log in and password. But T-Mobile's solution, which has been in a beta test since past year, uses the core phone network and doesn't rely on workarounds that mess up caller ID and other telephony functions. But T-Mobile also had to make significant changes to the network to support the service, CTO Neville Ray said.

T-Mobile also encourages assigning a single phone number to devices owned by multiple people.

With Digits, your phone number works on compatible internet-connected devices.

T-Mobile announced today that its DIGITS program will be leaving beta and launching soon. In a new video (below) released today, T-Mobile's COO, Mike Sievert shares more details about the plan after tens of thousands of customers gave the new program a shot over the last six months. DIGITS bring phone numbers into the Digital Age.

Feldman said 96 percent of beta users ended up using DIGITS on an additional smartphone or tablet, but another large chunk took advantage of the service on their wearable.

In a nutshell, Digits is a nifty service that combines the best features of services like Google Voice and AT&T NumberSync into a single product. Again, there are a plenty of use cases here, but the obvious one is people who carry two different phones for work and personal use. T-Mobile One Plus includes unlimited talk, text and high-speed data. It could also help businesses move to a mobile-first model, where a business' central number can go to multiple employee phones rather than a landline. A second DIGITS line can be added for $10 a month using Auto Pay. T-Mobile's full press release can be read here.
