New Orleans Crews Remove Statue of Confederate General

"Today we take another step in defining our city not by our past but by our bright future", Landrieu said in a statement on Tuesday.

Workers in New Orleans took down a Confederate monument to Gen. PGT Beauregard shortly after 3am Wednesday, the third of four such monuments to come down in the city as part of a removal process that has been anything but easy. In the months since, intense public debate over the meaning of the monuments sparked protests, fights on social media and lawsuits meant to block the removal, legal maneuvering that ultimately failed.

Friday afternoon's speech came as workers continued their efforts to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from the towering pedestal it has occupied on a New Orleans traffic circle since 1884.

More recently, lawmakers in the Louisiana House backed a proposal aimed at keeping cities from removing Confederate monuments in a controversial vote Monday that black lawmakers derided as "divisive" and "offensive".

Instead, the pale-skinned Landrieu wants to do something his four African-American predecessors didn't even pursue as their top policy agenda - remove the four "evil" Confederate monuments that are, apparently, at fault for people fleeing the city. The Battle of Liberty Place monument, which was removed four weeks ago, was erected by the Crescent City White League to remember the deadly insurrection led by white supremacists against the City's racially integrated police department and government. Some members of the pro-statue group waved Confederate flags.

"These statues are not just stone and metal, not just innocent remembrances of a benign history, these monuments celebrate a fictional sanitized confederacy", Landrieu said. Usually, in New Orleans, we're really sad when we see a family restaurant of 50 years go.

Citing the same safety concerns as it did before, the city said it would "not share details on a removal timeline for the Robert E. Lee statue".

Landrieu called for the monuments' removal in the lingering emotional aftermath of the 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners at a SC church.

City officials are trying to divorce New Orleans from symbols celebrating the Confederacy. The removal of the statue comes after the city ha. It was commissioned by the Jefferson Davis Memorial Association.

Beauregard commanded the attack at Fort Sumter, SC, that marked the outbreak of the Civil War. He said the removal itself was a historic moment. New Orleans was one of the largest ports active in the slave trade, where thousands of souls "were bought, sold and shipped up the Mississippi River to lives of forced labor, of misery, of rape and torture", he said.

Workers in New Orleans on Friday began the removal of a Confederate monument, the fourth and final removal in the city's controversial plan to free itself from what the mayor and many others characterized as public homages to slavery and white supremacy. Kennedy says he loves his native South.
