One killed, several injured as auto hits pedestrians in Times Square

A US Navy veteran plowed his auto into pedestrians in New York City's packed Times Square on Thursday, killing an 18-year-old woman and injuring 22 people.

The crash killed an 18-year-old woman, and the injured included her 13-year-old sister, police said. CBS affiliate WWMT-TV in West Michigan reports her name is Ava.

A man who sent his vehicle careening onto a Times Square sidewalk filled with pedestrians had been court-martialed out of the Navy.

Six people were rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, with two in serious condition and four others expected to be treated and released.

Evan Stemmer, 25, who was visiting NY from Detroit, said he was returning to his hotel with a friend when they heard the sirens and saw the arrest.

Elsman graduated from Portage Central High School in 2016.

"The Elsmans are a very close-knit family and that will be huge in a situation like this", Elsman's aunt Shelly Dusek said.

Victim Alyssa Elsman, 18, was a tourist from MI.

This is tragic news that breaks the heart of every parent out there. "We offer our thoughts, prayers, and condolences as family and friends mourn this tragic loss". "Today's events at Times Square were nothing short of horrific", Cuomo said.

A Navy official says Richard Rojas had been discharged as the result of a special court martial. He's accused of plowing through pedestrians in a crowded Times Square, killing one person.

Rojas enlisted in the US Navy in 2011 and served on the destroyer USS Carney in 2012.

The crash happened about 9 a.m. Arizona time.

"Well, it's part of living in the NY metropolitan area", Heller said of the incident.

First responders moved along the scene in both directions.

"My understanding is that no Australians were involved, but of course our consular staff are keeping a very close watch on that", Ms Bishop, in NY for meetings at the United Nations and to lobby for Australia gaining a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, told reporters.

Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination in New York City.

"I looked down at my phone for a minute or two and the next thing you know, boom!" The vehicle then caught fire.

"People were being hit and rolling off the auto", said Josh Duboff, who works at the nearby Thomson Reuters headquarters.

"There was like blood everywhere - really, really terrified", one witness said.

"He went through a real tough time", Ramos said, adding that he had lost contact with Rojas.

The driver of the vehicle that careened through New York City's Times Square yesterday was a US Navy veteran who had been arrested at least four times before for offenses including drunk driving and threatening someone with a knife, according to police officials and public records.
