Paris climate commitment 'crippling' to U.S. growth: White House

A novice in global affairs, Trump has been surprisingly candid about the impact his conversations with world leaders have had in shaping his views on numerous issues.

But there was agreement on other issues such as Syria, Libya and fighting terrorism, Paolo Gentiloni told reporters in Taormina, Italy, where the heads of the world's seven major industrialized economies are meeting.

The issue was brought into focus again this month when 22 people were murdered by a suicide bomber in Britain of Libyan descent who police believe was a member of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

"We will combat the misuse of the Internet by terrorists".

He also said Germany is lobbying "at all levels right now" for the U.S.to remain part of the Paris agreement.

However that co-operation did not stretch entirely to the issue of Global warming.

On climate change, Trump's position and how, if at all, he has evolved won't truly be known until he acts on the Paris climate accord.

Mohammed also said more resources are needed to protect against catastrophes and, at a news conference, called a move by the United States to cut its U.N. commitments "an alarm".

As the leaders of the G7 meet in Italy this weekend and Donald Trump tries to work out whether he's going to pull his country out of the Paris Agreement or not, the latest new polling shows that the British public are firmly behind two vital pieces of climate change legislation. Cohn said it was "robust".

"I think he's leaning to understanding the European position", said Gary Cohn, the President's chief economic adviser. He came here to learn.

It is unclear what Trump might decide about the Paris agreement, and White House officials have signaled that he might strike a compromise that involves lowering the USA emissions targets that some industries see as constraining growth while staying in the accord.

One specific issue Mr Trump has been consistent on is job creation.

Trump refused to say he would adhere to the mutual defense pact, known as Article V, though the White House later claimed that his very presence alongside twisted World Trade Center steel - a memorial outside North Atlantic Treaty Organisation headquarters - was evidence enough of his commitment.

Since entering the White House, the "shallow state" progressive wing of the building has pushed the president to keep Obama's climate pledge. China has also become a leader in renewable energy investment, particular solar panels.

In the simplest of terms, the fight over what to do about rising greenhouse gas emissions is a disagreement over the view that argues human life has been put at grave risk by fossil fuel emissions. By 2050 that growth could reach up to five per cent.

"He digested that", Cohn said.

For these reasons and more, President Trump should heed his advisers urging him to leave the Paris Agreement.

Ben Van Beurden of Royal Dutch Shell told NPR that he wants the USA to commit so that there is "predictability, consistency, and a level playing field" from which companies in his sector can operate going forward. Trump, who denounced the deal during the campaign, has since said he's waiting to make a final decision.

Trump's confrontational remarks in Brussels, on the eve of the two-day summit in the Mediterranean resort town of Taormina, cast a pall over a meeting at which America's partners had hoped to coax him into softening his stances on trade and climate change, CNBC reported. But Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state, did make a direct appeal in a broader meeting with the president and his top aides.

U.S. withdrawal from the 196-nation Paris Agreement would be a real blow to "climate diplomacy" which, less than 18 months ago, celebrated the historic pact made possible by a hard-fought agreement negotiated between Washington and Beijing.

Whether these messages will resonate with Mr Trump remains to be seen.

With May and Trump among four new faces in the club of the world's major democracies, the gathering in Italy was billed as a key test of how serious the new U.S. administration is about implementing its radical policy agenda, particularly on climate change.
