Sandy Kenyon review: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all new Pirates movie.

Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem opened up about playing Captain Jack Sparrow's nemesis in the fifth "Pirates" installment in an interview with "Good Morning America", saying he tried "to create a human being behind a monster" while playing his character.

As I said, the movie is basically a remix of "Curse of the Black Pearl". His nemesis, a ghost pirate played by Oscar victor Javier Bardem, is also looking for it. His mom Rudi actually preferred this one to the first "Pirates of the Caribbean". Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg directed Walt Disney Studios' blockbuster, which Jerry Bruckheimer produced. But I'll tell you a secret.

Henry, who has heard all about his father's adventures with Jack Sparrow, offers the captain to get him out of prison in exchange for him to help find the piece that shall set his father free. Javier Bardem has impressed with his villainous act in films like No Country For Old Men and Skyfall.

Hallelujah, Jack Sparrow's trusty Black Pearl swings into action after an interminable delay; three cheers for fearless Capt. Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush, endearing) who is also looking for treasure but finds something infinitely better.

In total, the Pirates film series has made more than $3.7 billion in the box office, so you'd think that producers would want to milk it for all its worth. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Though there's a strong emphasis on continuity with the prior films, most of the key creative positions are staffed by Pirates first-timers.

Overall, the film receives 2 1/2 stars out of 5, getting a bonus 1/2 star just for the guillotine escape sequence which I can't wait to watch again.

The film comes out this Friday and I'll be sure to be in attendance to see where the franchise continues or possibly ends in it's fifth time around.
