Spurs prepare for Game 2 vs Warriors with no Leonard, Parker

Leonard left Game 1 on Sunday after re-injuring his tender left ankle in the third quarter when Pachulia's foot slid under Leonard's following a jumper by the All-Star forward.

Rallying from a 20-point halftime deficit, the third-biggest comeback in National Basketball Association history, the Warriors got a game-high 40 points from Stephen Curry and 34 from Kevin Durant.

San Antonio outscored Golden State by 21 points while Leonard was on the floor.

Gregg Popovich was irate at Spurs practice on Monday.

San Antonio's head coach was furious during an interview today, expressing how upset he is with Zaza Pachulia and the play that took Kawhi Leonard out of Game 1. Golden State showed just why they are so risky - they can win by playing a lovely brand of team basketball, or simply by putting the ball in the hands of their two best players. And Kawhi's not there.

Leonard was injured while Pachulia was guarding him but did not think the Warriors player hurt him intentionally, as the exec above indicated.

"I got it going in the third, KD got it done in the fourth, everybody contributed and we got it done".

With Kawhi in the lineup, the Spurs raced off to a 25-point lead over the Warriors. You know, we don't know what's going to happen in the east. You want to know how we feel?

Popovich then listed numerous prior incidents between Pachulia and various members of the Spurs.

"And this particular individual has a history with that kind of action", Popovich said.

Curry credited the reversal of fortunes in the dying minutes to "aggressiveness, paying attention to details and obviously we've got to make shots".

While the Warriors didn't score on any of the three plays in the video above, the process of their offense in these situations was fantastic.

The league has publicly called these plays "dangerous" and it now penalizes them as a defensive foul, rather than as a flagrant foul or with a fine or suspension.

Perhaps Popovich is forgetting about the eight years the Spurs benefited from lockdown defender Bruce Bowen, who was known for his dirty tactics, repeatedly kicking players and dipping his foot underneath players when they took jumpshots.

"Because he has this history, it can't just be, oh, it was inadvertent", Popovich said.

"Who gives a damn about what his intent was? Ever hear of manslaughter?" "I don't think I should be making (any) comment". "He was contesting a shot".

After being asked for a status update on Leonard (undergoing an MRI), an awkward pause was broken by a question that rankled Popovich, and away we go.

"I'm not a happy camper", Popovich barked. I did what I had to do.

"I just did what I was supposed to do and challenged his shot". Then after a brief stint on the bench, he returned and landed on Pachulia's foot on a jumper, which sent Leonard limping to the bench for good. Leonard's left ankle kept him out of the Spurs series-clinching win over the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the quarterfinals. The team has not yet determined if he will be able to play in Game 3 on Saturday.
