Trump claims he did not interfere in FBI investigation

Before the press conference on Thursday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told senators that he knew Comey was going to be fired even before he wrote a memo that provided a basis for Comey's dismissal.

"This entire thing is a witch hunt propagated by a failed political campaign", he tweeted.

Rosenstein fielded questions in the closed session for more than an hour, but many senators left the briefing unsatisfied.

Lawmakers were still picking through the fallout of Wednesday's stunning announcement by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that he appointed Mueller to direct the special investigation into ties between Trump aides and Russian Federation.

The appointment won Rosenstein wide praise from Republicans and Democrats.

Washington- US President Donald Trump criticized on Thursday the appointment of a special counsel to lead the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 US election. "Not completely, but pretty much", Graham said.

Mr Mueller, a former federal prosecutor at the justice department, was confirmed as FBI director days before the September 11, 2001, attacks which would ultimately shape his tenure. "We can go back to dealing with legislative matters that affect the American people".

Associates of Mr Comey has also claimed that the president asked him to pledge his loyalty shortly after taking office. "That is a train wreck waiting to happen".

That's according to Missouri Democratic Sen. He may also release Mueller's findings publicly, given any legal or confidentiality restrictions.

Trump says, "we want to bring this country of ours together". "The scope of the investigation is still the same".

"This shuts the whole thing down", said one Republican source, speaking on Congressional efforts to investigate Comey's discussions with Trump.

"Director Mueller will still be in the chain of command under the Trump-appointed leadership of the Justice Department", Pelosi said in a statement Wednesday. "He can not take the place of a truly independent, outside commission that is completely free from the Trump administration's meddling". It is then Rosenstein's duty to brief the leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees on the outcome. "And the need for former Director Comey to come testify in public soon is as great as ever".
