Trump threatens to cancel press briefings, says Spicer 'gets beat up'

"During my tenure as DNI, it was my practice to defer to the FBI director, both Director Mueller and then subsequently Director Comey, on whether, when and to what extent they would inform me about such investigations", Clapper told senators. "This stems from the unique position of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which straddles both intelligence and law enforcement".

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

After an early-morning tweetstorm in which he addressed inconsistencies between his statements and those of his surrogates by suggesting the cancellation of "all future press briefings", President Donald Trump reiterated the threat in an interview Friday afternoon. "But I think that there are times when you, more than not, read a story where someone's trying to - trying to pull apart one word, one sentence and say, 'Aha!' and make it a gotcha thing". Trump told NBC he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of whether top Justice Department officials recommended the stunning step.

Calling Trump's remarks about possible taped conversations "outrageous", Sen.

Nick Ackerman, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY and an assistant Watergate prosecutor, told MSNBC that the situation reminds him of Watergate and makes him wonder if Trump recorded Comey or if the president is trying to intimidate him by implying he has a tape.

"The vice president, Sean and everyone else was put into a awful spot, they don't know what to say because it was an impulsive decision", he said, calling the rollout of Comey's firing "a very badly mishandled announcement" that was Trump's fault, not his staff's.

The administration is considering additional candidates amid intense pressure to select a leader who will be seen as independent of the White House.

"The president has nothing further to add on that", Spicer said at a press briefing.

"It's shocking to the conscience".

On Wednesday, Trump said Comey was let go because he "wasn't doing a good job". The move prompted an uproar among Democrats and some Republicans because Comey's agency is leading an investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation in that country's attempts to interfere with the USA presidential election past year.

McCabe said "there has been no effort to impede our investigation to date", but promised to inform the Congress should the White House tries to interfere with the FBI investigation.

"We work very hard to get you the most accurate and up-to-date information throughout the day", he also said.

The potential successors are Andrew McCabe, the acting FBI Director; Alice Fisher, a defence lawyer who used to lead the department's criminal division; Michael Garcia, a NY state appeals court judge; and John Cornyn, a Republican senator from Texas.

The No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, Richard Durbin, slammed the President after Friday's tweets, telling MSNBC that the President is "dangerous because he may be obstructing justice in terms of the investigation. and secondly his credibility has been destroyed".

Asked if Trump recorded conversations with Comey and if there are recording devices in the White House, Spicer did not give yes-or-no answers. He had argued that his surrogates can not be expected to "stand at podium with ideal accuracy".

The president's advisers said this week that Trump fired Comey on Tuesday in response to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Trump said he would have fired Comey even if Rosenstein had not recommended it.

'Under normal circumstances, we would not consider credible any claims that the White House may have taped conversations of meetings with the President, ' they wrote. On Thursday, Trump told NBC he knew he ran the risk that by firing Comey he would "confuse people" and "lengthen out the investigation" into ties to Russian Federation.

White House officials have refused to confirm or deny whether tapes exist.
