Trump to meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in West Bank

It has been US policy for the last 50 years to not recognise East Jerusalem as part of Israel, making a visit to the wall a political minefield.

Jewish Israelis see the entirety of Jerusalem as their 3,000-year-old capital.

The White House said the visit was unofficial and private.

Trump seemed eager for a chance to answer a question about the state of USA and Israeli intelligence sharing. During a grand welcome ceremony, to which Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made attendance mandatory for all government ministers, Trump said he hoped to "reaffirm the unbreakable bond" between the USA and Israel.

In Monday's public appearance of Trump with Netanyahu, the Israeli leader showed no signs he was upset about Trump's disclosure of intelligence.

"It will leave an impression on me for ever". He didn't elaborate on the more delicate question: whether the administration would change USA policy over the status of Jerusalem.

"I want to see peace with Israel and the Palestinians", he told Reuters a week before meeting with Abbas at the White House.

Arriving from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mr Trump expressed his hope for co-operation among United States allies in the Middle East. He will also meet with Pope Francis.

But when it comes to the Western Wall, real estate plays as large a role as religious faith. The U.S. has never recognized Israeli sovereignty over territory occupied in 1967, including east Jerusalem.

His remark on Sunday came after a reporter from Bloomberg News asked Netanyahu about the issue during a photo-op before his meeting with Trump.

It is situated below the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third-holiest site, referred to by Jews as the Temple Mount and considered their holiest.

The first was the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Rabbi of the Western Wall Shmuel Rabinowitz said he and Trump recited two psalms. Netanyahu threw up his hands and replied: "Who knows?" He placed a note between the massive stones, a centuries-old tradition of supplication.

Security was extremely tight for the Israeli leg of the visit, with police deploying some 10,000 officers. A large temporary security screen blocked views of the Western Wall.

The president and the first lady were greeted upon their arrival to Israel by Netanyahu, his wife, Sarah Netanyahu, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, and his wife, Nehama Rivlin, for a welcome ceremony. We are willing to work together.

Speaking at the city's Ben Gurion airport after flying from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mr Trump said his visit was to "reaffirm the unbreakable bond between the USA and the state of Israel".

Mr Trump said his meetings with King Salman and other leaders in Saudi Arabia had shown him that many in the region share the same concerns.
