UAE and Saudi Arabia to donate $100m to Ivanka Trump fund

But addressing the leaders of 55 Muslim-majority countries, Trump said the meeting marked a "new chapter" that would bring lasting benefits for citizens of the USA and those of the countries being represented at the meeting.

Trump has vowed to do whatever is necessary to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, but has given little sign of how he could revive long-stalled negotiations.

Trump in his speech called Hamas a terror group, leading to this response from the group that controls Gaza: "The depiction of Hamas as a terror organization by Trump makes clear the American bias on behalf of the occupation, and is aligned with the enemy's policies".

Of course, the Twittersphere had a field day contrasting the tone and careful language of the speech with Trump's previous pronouncements, including his claim in 2016 that "I think Islam hates us...."

On Monday, Trump also toured the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is believed to be where Jesus was crucified and the location of his tomb. In fact, he said he was "not here to lecture" the Muslim leaders, or to impose an American way of life.

Earlier, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin told Trump that Israel was honored to welcome a partner in both business and peace.

"But we need two willing parties", he said then. But merely supplying weapons to Riyadh and its allies will not bring peace to West Asia, or help defeat terrorism. He'll meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on the next leg of his trip.

"Thank you very much and shalom", Trump told Rivlin. "I am honored to be in the great state of Israel", a nation whose "friendship" will "always be No. 1 to me".

RIYADH: A female member of Saudi Arabia's Shoura Council said US President Donald Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia gives new hope in the global fight against terror and extremism.

Trump and his entourage, including daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Mr Trump said the story is another one the news media has gotten wrong.

Mr Tillerson referred to the visit as "a moment in time" and suggested that the U.S. would take a more active role in the future in brokering a deal if both sides make serious commitments. "Your visit here is truly historic", Netanyahu said, addressing Trump.

He said on Monday in Jerusalem that shared concern about Iran was driving Israel and many Arab states closer, calling Tehran a real threat in the region. "But we had no idea how quickly this would build".

"May your trip be a milestone on the path to peace", Netanyahu said.

Still, Trump was enthusiastically received by Netanyahu, who leapt to his feet when the president declared that his administration "will always stand with Israel".
