UNSC to hold urgent consultations on NKorea missile test

The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Tuesday to discuss North Korea's latest missile launch.

The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles), KCNA said. The launch is a direct challenge to the new South Korean president elected four days ago and comes as U.S., Japanese and European navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific.

"The United States should never expect us to give up our nuclear capability", the main Rodong newspaper said in a commentary carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

USA officials said the missile flew across the country and landed in the Sea of Japan, about 60 miles from Vladivostok in eastern Russian Federation.

The missile today reached an altitude of more than 2,000km during its 30minute flight time, the Japanese government said.

Guam is home to Andersen Air Force Base, through which the US Air Force rotates heavy bombers including B-1s, B-2s and B-52s.

A South Korean army soldier walks by a TV news program showing a file image of missiles being test-launched by North Korea, at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, on Sun., May 14, 2017.

North Korean engineers "may well be able to draw warhead re-entry data from that which is applicable to their ICBM ambitions", he said.

The launch is also the first since a new liberal president took office in South Korea on Wednesday. Moon has advocated dialogue with North Korea to denuclearize.

Earlier, Japanese officials said the missile landed in the Sea of Japan but outside the country's exclusive economic zone.

Moon, unlike his conservative predecessors, advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang but warned Sunday that dialogue would be possible "only if the North changes its attitude".

He said South Korea will respond to provocations.

"It tells Russian Federation, 'I can touch you, too, '" Schuster said.

She said it was time to "send a strong, unified message that this is unacceptable, and I think you'll see the worldwide community do that". China is already enforcing an import ban on coal, North Korea's most important export.

On Sunday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping launched a major trade and infrastructure summit with multiple world leaders in Beijing. A North Korean delegation was also attending. She says more analysis was needed.

"Having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he's absolutely not going to do it", Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, told ABC's "This Week".

The path across North Korea kept the missile as far away from South Korean, Japanese and United States radars as possible and even then those sensors would only get a side view, Layton said.

The United States called for repercussions from the worldwide community.

In a statement yesterday, China's Foreign Ministry urged all parties to "exercise restraint".

Abe convened a meeting of the National Security Council at the Prime Minister's Office on Sunday, asking for a response to the situation in cooperation with the worldwide community.

Kim is trying to flawless launching a missile so it can carry a nuclear weapon, which North Korea is also trying to build. "This is totally unacceptable and we strongly protest it".

The US and North Korea announced an agreement that year in which Washington would provide food aid in exchange for a moratorium by the North on missile tests and uranium enrichment and its return to six-nation talks.

This was the North's first missile test since a launch on April 29 that was considered a failure, with the unidentified projectile exploding a few minutes after lift-off.

Tensions are running high on the Korean peninsula with Pyongyang and Washington exchanging hostile rhetoric. "And we're going to continue, whether it's sanctions, whether it's press statements, anything that we have to do". He favors a combination of sanctions and talks to bring a halt to Kim's nuclear weapons program.
