Venezuela leader: Officials treated like Jews under Nazis

US President Donald Trump has called the situation in Venezuela "a mess" and his aides have threatened tougher measures against Caracas.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has likened the harassment of government officials and their families outside of Venezuela to the treatment of Jews under the Nazis.

She said the order was one more example of US attempts to destabilize Venezuela's government, adding that Maduro strongly backs the Supreme Court magistrates who are "victims of USA imperial power".

In its 2011 budget, the state department wrote, "The United States has a major interest in preserving and strengthening Venezuelan democratic institutions". They are demanding early elections and accuse him of trying to cling to power.

Venezuelan Ambassador Rafael Ramirez strongly rejected the USA bringing his country's political dispute to the United Nations' most powerful body and accused Washington of again trying "to interfere in our domestic issues".

In New York on Wednesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley warned of the consequences of "serious instability" in the country.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Thursday that authorities confiscated his passport and prevented him from traveling to NY to discuss the country's crisis with United Nations officials.

During a televised Cabinet meeting late Tuesday, the far-left South American leader also said that recent opposition rallies in Caracas were reminiscent of rallies during the rise of Nazism and fascism in pre-World War II Europe.

Maduro says that is needed to bring peace to Venezuela, but opponents view it as a cynical tactic to buy time and create a biased body that could perpetuate the socialists' rule. The protest in Caracas comes after a tumultuous 24 hours of looting and protests in the western state of Tachira that led the government to send in troop reinforcements. On Thursday, several thousand demonstrators once again collapsed Caracas and other cities in protests that ended in clashes with security forces firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

The State Prosecutor's Office said three National Guard sergeants would be charged later on Thursday for their "presumed responsibility" in Castellanos' killing.

Bolivia's United Nations ambassador Sacha Sergio Llorentty Soliz, a member of the Security Council, agreed with Ramirez, telling reporters: "This meeting, instead of helping solve the problem, it will really be an obstacle". "I will not be able to attend the meeting with the (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights", Capriles said in a video posted online.

Trump said that the USA was working with Colombia to do what is necessary to resolve the situation in Venezuela during a press conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in Washington, D.C.

"We can not lose any opportunity to help mediate" in Venezuela's current crisis, Jungmann said.
