Video shows mudslide taking out a California highway

A monster of a landslide has buried a quarter-mile section of the scenic coastal highway in California's Big Sur region, piling fresh misery on a remote area that hasn't seen the road fully passable for months.

Part of California's famed Pacific Coast Highway is covered in dirt and rocks after a landslide covered the highway near Big Sur. All access to the highway remains closed because the mass of rocks and dirt is still unstable and according to authorities, there is no word on when it will be reopened, reports WTVR Richmond. Spokeswoman Susana Cruz tells the Associated Press that "it's still moving", and it will take some time to assess the scope of the cleanup and rebuilding process that is to come.

Officials said that it is the largest mudslide in California history.

And it's not just one slide, either, Caltrans said. Officials had closed the highway before the slide because crews had been trying to remove dirt from an earlier slide.

The affected area is about nine miles south of Monterey County.

Caltrans had been working on the scenic road but suspended work and removed heavy equipment from the Mud Creek area last week because of a threat of new slides - a threat that became a reality Saturday.

Last year, a wildfire burned for almost three months in the Los Padres National Forest and on private land, sparked by an illegal campfire.

Kirk Gafill, president of the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce and owner of the historic Nepenthe Restaurant, said the landslide may be a blessing in disguise as it has potential to stable the land the Caltrans was looking forward to shoring up.

On the other hand, he acknowledges his theory may be wishful thinking.

Rori Cosma says Ragged Point Inn and Resort is open for business even if its only for visitors coming from the south. He said Tuesday he wouldn't trade in his work location for somewhere safer.

"We're all going to make it, I'm pretty sure", he said. "These are way beyond the scope of what we're used to responding to".
