WannaCry ransomware worm infected over 200k computers worldwide

Two-thirds of those affected in last week's global ransomware attack were running Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system without the latest security updates, a survey for Reuters by security ratings firm BitSight found. Kaspersky's research backs this up with only a small number of infections reported on Windows 10 devices.

"We have not seen any instances where those infected had their files deleted".

Raiu's claim countered an assertion made by virtually every media report and blog post published after "WannaCry" emerged June 12.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that it will continue to support Windows 7 until 2020, however, Markus Nitschke, Head of Windows at Microsoft Germany previously warned users, particularly business owners, of the dangers of using the operating system. It now works on Windows 7, XP and 2003.

The reason for XP's absence from the WannaCry count was simple.

When the WannaCry ransomware infected computers in the NHS and around the world its spread was partly blamed on computers running Windows XP. First: update. Enable Windows Update on your computer, install security updates regularly and download the patch from Microsoft's website immediately.

Once news broke of the leak, Microsoft released a patch for older systems like XP and Server 2003, but only to those corporate customers who had paid Microsoft for continued software support. More than 7 percent of the world's PCs are still running Windows XP which is the most attacked OS till date.

Raiu thought different. "I think Microsoft was anxious about the possibility of someone leveraging this exploit", Raiu argued. Windows XP accounts for only 5.36% of Windows computers globally.

They are having more luck dissecting flaws that limited its spread.

According to analytics vendor Net Applications, approximately 53% of all Windows personal computer ran Windows 7 last month. Some argue that security vulnerabilities should be fixed immediately once found, and that hiding them puts everyone at risk for further attacks. The WannaCry ransomware demanded a payment of about $300 or £230 in bitcoins after encrypting files.

Other factors may have played a part, however. Indeed, for what I've tested, under Windows 10, CryptReleaseContext does cleanup the memory (and so this recovery technique won't work).

Those now suffering from the still-spreading WannaCry ransomware and who have yet to reboot their systems have a program to try in order to recover their files: wanakiwi, which has been tested as effective across all vulnerable Windows releases.

On the other hand, less than one in a thousand were powered by Windows XP making it nearly insignificant for the discussion. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit led all others, accounting for 60% of the total.
