Watch Texas Lawmakers Get Physical After One Calls ICE on Protesters

As the proceedings started, hundreds of seats in the gallery were filled and the demonstrators were wearing red T-shirts that read "Lucha", or "Fight".

Texas' new law, often referred to as SB4 for "Senate Bill 4", is reminiscent of a 2010 Arizona "show your papers" measure - which allowed police to inquire about a person's immigration status during routine interactions such as traffic stops - that was eventually struck down in court. The volatile turn of events came as mostly Latino protesters flooded the state Capitol in Austin on the legislature's final day, explains the Texas Observer.

Protesters march in the streets outside the Texas State Capital on "A Day Without Immigrants" February 16, 2017 in Austin, Texas.

One member, Cesar Blanco, said that for Rinaldi to assume the people peacefully protesting in the gallery were not Americans or were undocumented was "disrespectful" and added it demonstrated his "true colours". The demonstration continued for several minutes as police fanned out and led small groups of protesters out into the hallway. Rinaldi also said Nevárez‏ threatened to "get me on the way to my vehicle". "Wants to see them gone so much so that he called ICE".

After the exchange, Rinaldi and Democratic lawmakers began rushing at one another, with others on the floor attempting to break them up. That's when the threats and scuffle ensued.

Rinaldi said in his statement that he was speaking in self defense.

A Republican state lawmaker prompted a scuffle in the Texas House on Monday when he told his Democratic colleagues that it had called Immigration and Customs Enforcement on protesters in the capitol who were speaking out against a new immigration law.

One of the Democrats, Representative César J. Blanco, said Rinaldi told him and others, "We are going to have them deported", and then used some obscene words.

Rinaldi contends that Nevarez told him he'd "get him" on his way to the vehicle. Several of my colleagues heard the threats made and witnessed Ramon assaulting me."is unclear if anyone will be charged or investigated over the incident". It also bans local entities from adopting policies that ban their police officers from asking about the immigration status of people they detain. The bill provides civil fines and even criminal penalties to law enforcement officials choosing to ignore immigration authorities.

While the Democrats have centered their opposition to Trump on unsubstantiated allegations of Russian hacking and demands for "tougher stance" against Putin, there is broad support in the working class for the defense of their immigrant class brothers and sisters, the defense of democratic rights and freedom of speech, and a defense of science and progress.

"Fear motivated me to get involved", Abril Gallardo, a 26-year-old Mexican native who entered the US illegally as a child, told the AP.
