30 people taken to London hospitals after fire

At least 200 firefighters and 40 engines are still on the scene of the huge fire trying to douse it.

Fire raced through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in North Kensington around 01:00.

Residents told CNN they had seen people still trapped inside the building. The building was engulfed quickly, and London's fire commissioner says there have been "a number" of fatalities. "Half of the building was ablaze by the time we got out".

"I was in bed and heard "beep, beep, beep" and thought, 'I'll get up and run downstairs as quickly as I could'".

Residents said repairs, including the addition of some sort of cladding, had been made to the exterior of the block recently.

"Unfortunately, the Grenfell Action Group have reached the conclusion that only an incident that results in serious loss of life of KCTMO residents will allow the external scrutiny to occur that will shine a light on the practices that characterise the malign governance of this non-functioning organisation".

The tower, built in the 1970s and renovated several times, contains 120 homes.

Smoke and flames rise from building on fire in London, Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

"At this stage we are aware of two people being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation".

London mayor Sadiq Khan also declared it a "major incident". There has been no word from emergency services as to whether people are trapped inside the building or not.

Nicky Paramasivan, who was in his seventh floor flat with his partner and child, said the advice issued to residents in the event of a fire was to stay in their flats.

"This is an absolutely devastating fire", Nick Paget-Brown, the local council leader, told CNN.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire", Daly said.

London's Fire Brigade says that a structural engineer and urban search and rescue crews have assessed the stability of the burning tower block in west London and believe it is not in danger of collapsing.

"Within another 15 minutes the whole thing was up in flames and there were still people at their windows shouting "Help me".

"It's so heartbreaking, I've seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can't get out".

"There were no fire alarms", said Edward Daffarn 55, who was warned by a neighbor to flee.

Witnesses said they heard screaming from the upper floors as the flames rose in the night and one desperate resident could be seen waving a white cloth from a top floor window.

George Clarke, the presenter of Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live he was covered in ash even though he was 100 meters from the scene.
