Amazon Alexa now blocks calls and messages to your Echo

Amazon Alexa now blocks calls and messages to your Echo

Until now, if an Amazon user had your phone number and the Alexa mobile app, you couldn't stop them from calling you, recording a voice message or sending texts to any of your Alexa devices, including mobile apps and Echos.

The ability to answer calls and hear new text messages read aloud is unique to Alexa and Echo among mainstream voice assistants.

I don't yet see the block feature on the Android version of Alexa, but hopefully Amazon will update that app quickly so that everyone can have greater control over who has a quick line into their home. The same app for Android devices that appears in Google Play has not yet been updated with the same feature upgrades, at least not at the time of this writing.

For those unfamiliar, last month Amazon introduced the ability to call and message using Alexa and was designed for use with devices like the Echo speakers. Amazon user Elise Oras anxious in a Medium post last month that she would be unable to block calls from anyone who also has the Alexa app-including potentially insane ex-boyfriends. Vulnerable users still have to go through contacts one-by-one if they want to stop calls, or else courageous a customer service call, including demands for why they want to disable calling. However, the privacy of this feature was severely criticized when people realized that they do not have an option to block contacts from reaching them.
