America's Cup: Emirates Team New Zealand capsize in semifinal

New Zealand's 5-2 victory over the British crew led by Ben Ainslie means they progress to the America's Cup challenger play-offs this weekend when they will face either Sweden's Artemis Racing or SoftBank Team Japan.

Despite three decades in the sport, the skipper of Great Britain's Land Rover BAR was equally as shocked as onlooking fans when Emirates Team New Zealand capsized in spectacular fashion. All crew members were reported safe following the capsize, which sent three men into the water.

New Zealand are now one step closer to a rematch with Oracle Team USA - who rallied from 8-1 down to beat the Kiwis in the 34th America's Cup four years ago.

They advance to face the victor between Sweden's Artemis Racing and SoftBank Team Japan.

SoftBank Team Japan sailed consistently to earn two wins over Artemis Racing, who struggled much of the day with breakages and boat-control challenges that led to additional penalties.

Outteridge and Iain Jensen, an Artemis crewman, won the gold medal in the 49er class in the 2012 Olympics, with Burling and Blair Tuke, also a Team New Zealand crewman, taking the silver.

Before the day's racing, Land Rover BAR were 3-1 down in the best of five series, and two further losses confirmed the end of their campaign.

Fortunately for them, the wind speed went above the 24-knot maximum, causing racing to be cancelled for the day and giving New Zealand an extra 24 hours to get their boat ready. The force of the water as the bows dug deep into the Great Sound ripped most of the aerodynamic fairings from the boat.

While the structure of their boat was said to have been sound, there were rumours that they had to build a new wing made up of part of the wing they had damaged earlier in the day and part-salvaged from the accident.

"That was obviously the key moment", an elated Outteridge said of the way the race unfolded in high winds and choppy seas. "It certainly helps, and that's why we've been pivotal in supporting the framework agreement that Martin Whitmarsh has put forward", said Ainslie.

"It's two big, well-supported teams going head to head", he said. The Swedes were under pressure with Team New Zealand hitting the mark at good speed. They nursed the broken boat back to their base, hauled the boat, pulled the broken wing and installed a spare and were back out in 40 minutes, still putting bits and pieces together and setting up systems as they started just on time.
