Apple Updates MacBook Lineup with Kaby Lake Processors

Apple also today updated MacBook and MacBook Pro with faster processors, added faster SSDs to MacBook and introduced a new $1,299 (US) 13-inch MacBook Pro. Now, the new series of iMacs is official, with improved displays, better CPUs and much better graphics performance. On the inside, all of the new iMacs including the 21.5 inch and 27-inch models come with 7th gen Intel Core Kaby Lake processors, which boasts of a higher base and turbo frequencies.

Apple also gave a preview of the upcoming Space Gray iMac model coming this fall, which Apple says "will be by far the most powerful Mac ever".

There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports included now to help users expand their system with different external devices.

The new iMacs will run you from anywhere between $1099 for the base configuration of the 21.5 inch model up to a starting price of $1799 for the 5K 27-inch iMac. The 21.5-inch model delivers up to three times faster performance and the 27-inch model is up to 50 percent faster. The desktops will also feature Intel Kaby Lake processors.

Apple has changed the bundled small keyboard for the iMac though, which is now more compact and flat - I'd drop another $60 for the full-size Magic keyboard with a numeric keypad to go with the iMac. Meanwhile, the 13-inch MacBook Air will get a "megahertz" boost.

Apple still positions the MacBook for people who are okay with good enough performance in a package that's easy to take on the go. Apple will hope that the iMac Pro will address the concerns of video editors looking to work with 4K or 8K video that need workstation-level power - a market that the company has failed to serve for the last couple of years forcing once Apple-only outfits to switch to alternative operating systems and machines.

Finally, the iMac Pro comes housing the same display as the straight, 27-inch iMac and ditches the Fusion Drives altogether for 1TB to 4TB worth of SSD storage. The maximum storage capacity of the iMac is capped at 2TB. You'll have to wait until December for it, but if you do, you'll be rewarded with an 8-core Xeon processor and the AMD Radeon Vega GPU.

The iMac Pro will start at $4,999 in the U.S. and will be available in December.
