Arab neighbours say 'nothing to negotiate' with Qatar after cutting ties

President Donald Trump injected the United States into a volatile crisis among America's Mideast allies, siding Tuesday with Saudi Arabia and other countries against Qatar in a dispute that threatens to disrupt efforts to defeat the Islamic State group and counter Iran.

Asked for specifics about what Arab nations want from Qatar, Mr Gargash said expelling members of Hamas and other groups from Qatar is important.

Qatar is also a major regional diplomatic player and global investor and is set to host the World Cup, football's biggest tournament, in 2022.

"So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off", he tweeted in reference to his trip to Riyadh last month. Qatar strongly denies supporting terrorism, and on Tuesday called for talks to settle the dispute.

Saudi Arabia and its allies including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties and transport links with Qatar on Monday, accusing the tiny state of backing extremism.

The Malaysian government is monitoring the situation between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and collecting information on whether there will be flight cancellations by Qatar Airways.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is a regional bloc comprising Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE and Oman.

The president's sharp critique of Qatar pulled the USA directly into a conflict that American diplomats had wanted the bickering parties to resolve among themselves.

Trump also says that unity among Gulf Cooperation Council countries and strong partnerships with the US are crucial for defeating terrorism.

"The Qataris should not count on that base as being a guarantee of sort of American protection when it comes to conflict with Saudi Arabia", Al Qassemi said.

There was no immediate response for a request for comment on that demand from a Qatari official. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the region have accused Qatar of funding terror groups and cozying up to Iran. Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, expressed gratitude to Qatar for supporting the USA presence, outlining no plans to adjust American military posture.

"The ministry will work closely with Mavcom, especially on how Qatar Airlines would deal with Malaysians travelling with them", she said.

The Saudi-led bid to isolate Qatar has also received the blessing of the Cairo-based Al-Azhar, an institution regarded as the top seat of learning in Sunni Islam, which in a statement expressed the hope that "rogue regimes" would "return to their senses".

For Trump, the rift has emerged as a key test of his goal to unite the region around destroying IS and other extremist groups, and containing Iranian influence.

Gargash said Qatar "absolutely" should expel members of Hamas, stop its support of terror groups "with al-Qaida DNA" around the world and rein in the many media outlets it funds, chief among them the Doha-based satellite news network Al-Jazeera.

Doha has a history of supporting various radical Islamist groups and movements across the Middle East.

Trump made a series of tweets Tuesday calling into question his commitment to the peninsular nation after earlier telling Qatar's ruling emir that "we've been friends now for a long time".

And a coup attempt or any cross-border action by the Saudis or Emiratis would put Trump in an uncomfortable position, given his now vocal support for the anti-Qatar action.
