Avalanche not identifying players protected from National Hockey League expansion draft

This is collaboration between Vegas Golden Knights writers Thomas Conroy and Shayna Goldman analyzing the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft by each division.

Here's everything you need to know to navigate the NHL's busy schedule over the next three weeks.

The entire idea of an expansion draft is to let an expansion franchise take players from existing teams. Claude Giroux, Valtteri Filppula and Wayne Simmonds meet the criteria.

Thursday, Sept. 21 - Dallas, Pepsi Center, 7 p.m.

Teams can now buy out players for the first time this offseason.

Fill out as the forms for as many teams as you like.

Teams must submit their list of protected players by June 17. Under certain stipulations, teams have to contemplate whom to protect and whom to expose, and that all goes on while McPhee wheels and deals behind the scenes.

By 10 a.m. ET on June 21, the Golden Knights must submit the list of players it has selected. Fleury has a no-movement clause in his contract so he must agree to waive it to be traded or exposed in the expansion draft. "People are going to be trying to do things, whether they have one too many defensemen or whether they have one too many forwards or whether they have needs that they could possibly correct by taking a surplus off somebody else". The Bruins must decide which player is more valuable to the team's overall success.

The Central Registry will accept these at the same time so that there's no amusing business around leaks or anything. Is it worth it to lose a great forward to protect both Cody Ceci and Marc Methot? That should be a fun Father's Day morning.

Las Vegas will have a 72-hour window, starting on June 18, to negotiate with exposed restricted and unrestricted free agents.

The Golden Knights will be allowed first crack at any pending unrestricted or restricted free agent, as long as that player is not protected in the Expansion Draft. And if not, Oshie could be among the most sought after free agents.

The Golden Knights must operate within a few restrictions during the draft. Las Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee has a lot of decisions to make. Should they select an RFA, the team they are selecting him from will not be eligible for compensation as they normally would be. New Sabres GM Jason Botterill will have some hard decisions pending, especially which goaltender to protect in the expansion draft.

Will we see an early morning flood of trades?

Round 1 will be held Friday evening, broadcast on NBCSN, CBC and Sportsnet.

That could alter free agency, which begins July 1.

Franchises can choose to protect either nine players or eleven. "I think there's going to be a lot of interest from players in playing in Las Vegas". Las Vegas can only select one player from each of the NHL's 30 other teams.

The Golden Knights must take 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.

Two forwards who are under contract for the coming season, and either played 40 plus games last season or 70 plus games over the last two seasons.

Because the league has failed to increase revenue in any significant way, it seems like the salary-cap ceiling will remain around $73 million for next season.
