British Prime Minister Vows to Carry on Despite Election Losses

Either way, this has proven to be an embarrassing blow for Theresa May, who called the snap election with the hope of winning an overwhelming majority. Instead, Thursday's vote damaged her authority and made her negotiating position more vulnerable to criticism.

Meanwhile, despite being written off as the inevitable loser in this election, Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party has increased its share of the vote by 10%, and has won more than 30 extra seats, taking its total to 261.

The Scottish National Party lost 22 seats to knock the party down to 35 seats, according to the BBC.

In the last parliamentary election in 2015, then-prime minister David Cameron's Conservative Party won 331 seats and Labour won 232.

"What it means is we will have pressure in the House of Commons for a soft Brexit", said Jack Straw, a former Labour foreign minister. John Kampfner, its chief executive, says that "May has seen that there is no clear mandate for the government to negotiate a hard Brexit".

DUP leader Arlene Foster said she and Mrs May would speak further to "explore how it may be possible to bring stability to this nation at this time of great challenge". Support would need to be mustered for each parliamentary vote. It also promised to guarantee the rights of European citizens now living in Britain, regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. That is why the European Union wants the talks to go smoothly. However, it now appears likely that there will be a delay in the start of the extremely complex negotiations, although any deal needs to be concluded by the end of the two-year period after the withdrawal decision was formally initiated in March this year.

"For the United Kingdom, the debate needs to start on what the British people think Brexit should mean".

Among conservatives there was clear fury at the result, a seismic political shock that could trigger a second election within months.

Graham Brady, who as chairman of the so-called 1922 Committee would organize any leadership contest, also said Friday he had been told Tory lawmakers don't want another general election.

There was little sympathy for May from some Europeans.

May had spent the campaign denouncing Corbyn as the weak leader of a spendthrift party that would crash Britain's economy and flounder in Brexit talks, while she would provide "strong and stable leadership" to clinch a good deal for Britain.

"We must in my view seek to deliver an open Brexit, not a closed one, which puts our country's economic growth first", Davidson said. "Clearly if she's got a worse result than two years ago and is nearly unable to form a government, then she, I doubt, will survive in the long term as Conservative Party leader". Speaking after being re-elected to his London seat, Corbyn said May should "go. and make way for a government that is truly representative of all the people of this country".

May called an election three years ahead of schedule, at a time when her party was well ahead in the polls. "I expect more uncertainty now".
