Calls for Trump state visit to be cancelled after London attack tweets

After initially saying Mr Khan was "entirely right" to make a statement after the attacks where he tried to comfort and calm down Londoners, Mr Johnson was then asked about President Trump's state visit invite. The visit is due to take place later this year, although the exact date has not been confirmed.

NY mayor Bill de Blasio summed up the feelings of many when he said "Mayor Sadiq Khan is doing an extraordinary job supporting Londoners in a time of pain".

'My point about the state visit is that state visits are extended to leaders of countries where they're respected and have paid their dues'.

"Honestly I've got better and more important things to focus on".

May made the invitation to Trump just seven days after he took office, a decision that prompted accusations that Britain, its global influence set to be weakened by Brexit, was kowtowing to the new USA leader. "I just haven't got the time to deal with tweets from Donald Trump".

Mr Khan told the Press Association: "I've said for a long time that I think that the invitation from Prime Minister Theresa May to Donald Trump for a state visit was premature".

"The invitation has been issued and accepted and I see no reason to rescind that", Boris Johnson told BBC radio.

Khan said the United States and Britain were "close allies" and they should continue to work closely together.

President Donald Trump's sons are defending their father's attack against London's mayor over his handling of the recent extremist attack. However, Trump chose to highlight one line out of context, rather than Khan's fully stated commitment to the safety of his city.

'Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. "They helped save lives, they reduced the death toll, some of the police officers, some of the armed response teams, who help keep our cities safe, are Muslims. No reason to be alarmed", Khan said.

Some people with a propensity for self-destructive behavior can't seem to help themselves, President Trump apparently among them. "He is wrong about his travel ban on Muslims, and he is wrong about many other things".

Khan was among those protesting the visit, saying at the time that Trump's immigration ban was "cruel".

In the wake of Saturday night's terror attack on London Bridge and Borough Market, which left seven people dead and 48 injured, Trump and Khan have been trading barbs.
