Can the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise just be done already?

With this change to the history of the compass, Dead Men Tell No Tales ends up raising continuity issues within the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and for Jack Sparrow himself. Many stories run parallel, including those introducing franchise newbies (Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, both passable) and those sustaining old enemies Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

In total, the Pirates film series has made more than $3.7 billion in the box office, so you'd think that producers would want to milk it for all its worth.

The Pirates franchise has the domestic record for Memorial Day, set in 2007 when "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" pulled in $139 million over the four days. His answer to breaking the curse is in the hands of the perpetually drunk and illusive Jack Sparrow and in a book held by the lovely damsel, Carina Smythe (Kaya Scodelario).

Of course, this would not be a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without everyone's favorite character: Captain Jack Sparrow tagging along.

Jack's only hope of survival is the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful tool that bestows its possessor with control over the seas. Crew-less and broke, Jack's situation declines further when he learns one of his greatest foes, the evil Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) is coming for him.

We didn't need Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar to actually say the line "dead men tell no tales" before the opening credits to get where the phrase came from. Don't believe it - Rønning and Sandberg are already tapped to direct Episode 6.

"There are now many Pirates movies out there".

Parent-child themes are forced, some key footage was spoiled in the trailers and the film, like it's predecessors, just goes on and on for WAY too long.

But it's hard not to get on board this swashbuckling romp - particularly with Johnny Depp in fine form.

Captain Jack steals a huge chunk of screen time, as always, but unlike in previous films there's no attempt to pretend he's the hero of the piece.
