Chris Christie: Trump's pressure on Comey was 'normal New York City conversation'

A "very concerning" request from the president to end an investigation into a devoted presidential appointee.

Following a counter-terrorism briefing in the Oval Office on February 14, Trump allegedly told Comey, "I want to talk about Mike Flynn", who had resigned the day before.

Testifying under oath in a Senate hearing watched worldwide, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey has accused the Trump administration of defaming him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the aftermath of his abrupt firing by President Donald Trump.

Trump was expected to dispute Comey's claims that he demanded loyalty and asked the FBI director to drop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to a person close to the president's legal team who demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss legal strategy. Trump also personally urged the FBI director to back off an ongoing federal investigation, which looks an terrible lot like obstruction of justice.

In his written testimony, Comey quoted Trump as telling him the Russian Federation investigation was a "cloud" impairing his ability to operate as president.

Trump complained the investigation was a "cloud" over his administration that needed to be lifted, Comey said. But Trump gave a different explanation when he said in an NBC News interview that he had already chose to dismiss Comey and was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing" when he did so.

Ryan Goodman, a professor at New York University School of Law, said Trump's efforts to protect Flynn provide "strong evidence" of obstruction of justice.

In short: Comey's public hearings tend to be explosive news-fests.

Intelligence Committee chairman Richard Burr asked Mr Comey.

Shortly after fired FBI Director James Comey's prepared testimony was released Wednesday afternoon, Chris Christie appeared on MSNBC to offer a defense of Trump's interactions with Comey, which Comey himself called "inappropriate". I didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed.

"I was pleased to see that the testimony seems to confirm the president's account of his interactions with Comey", Gaetz said.

Comey, in detail, relays how Trump asked all of his top advisers to leave a February 14 meeting in the Oval Office - one by one - until he was alone with Comey. Comey told him to contact the Acting Deputy Attorney General with his concerns.

A few moments later, the President said, "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty". Some may attempt to divert attention from Comey's remarks about Trump by focusing on two issues they've repeatedly seized on: leaks and revealing the names of Americans in intelligence reports. During this meeting, Comey allegedly assured Trump that he was not under investigation, the first of many times. Trump supposedly explained that Flynn was sacked because he had misled the Vice President, not because he had done anything wrong. A Comey associate has said he obtained Mueller's permission to testify.

"I'm not familiar with it", he said.
