Court: UK baby must remain on life support for 6 more days

A European court ordered Britain on Tuesday to maintain a terminally-ill baby on life support for six more days after his parents, desperate to take their son to the US for experimental treatment, lost their appeals before United Kingdom courts.

Parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard want their 10-month-old son, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, to undergo a therapy trial in America.

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being cared for, have said the therapy in the USA is experimental and will not help him, arguing that life support treatment should be stopped.

Charlie's mother, Connie Yates, has already indicated - on the GoFundMe website - what will happen to money raised if they can not take him to the U.S. and life support treatment ends.

"In the event that no substantive application is submitted, the interim measure shall be maintained until midnight on Monday 19 June 2017".

Charlie's fate has moved the British public, and media in the country have passionately followed the legal battle.

Charlie's parents, who are in their 30s, have appealed for money on a GoFundMe page to cover doctors' bills in America.

In a statement issued in Strasbourg, the European Court of Human Rights said that the hospital must keep the baby on a ventilator and provide the baby with nursing care. "He can not move his arms or legs or breathe unaided". His brain is severely affected, and there was a significant decline in the level of his brain functioning in January, the U.K. Supreme Court explained last week in dismissing the parents' appeal.

Ms Yates and her partner Chris Gard launched the final legal challenge at the European court after their appeal to the Supreme Court failed.

"It can not be left to the parents alone", their statement read.

The parents are seeking permission to transfer Charlie, who has a rare genetic condition and brain damage, from the Great Ormond Street Hospital to the USA where he can undergo therapy.

In this case, with "the heaviest of hearts, but with complete conviction for Charlie's best interests", the judge ruled that the hospital could withdraw all treatment except palliative care "to permit Charlie to die with dignity".

Papers filed by the couples' lawyers have said they should be allowed to make any decisions about Charlie's treatment, unless it might pose harm to him.
