Daesh (ISIS) Claims Attacks in Tehran

Meanwhile, the Tehran Security Council has convened an emergency meeting after two terror attacks were reported on the Iranian Parliament and Imam Khomeini Mausoleum respectively on Wednesday.

Iran's state broadcaster said a security guard was killed at the tomb and that one of the attackers was slain by security guards.

The IS group often claims attacks around the world, even when links to the group can not be confirmed.

Some posted selfies of themselves looking calm, even as gun battles raged in surrounding office buildings and snipers took position on nearby rooftops. The reports said Iran's security forces neutralized one terrorist, another one committed suicide.

Earlier: A security guard has been killed and 12 other people injured in twin attacks on Iran's parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

IRIB and Fars said an armed man was inside the mausoleum in southern Tehran, around 20km from the parliament building, with reports of several injuries.

"We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times", Trump said in a brief statement.

The two attacks, which wounded dozens of people, are likely to deepen enmity and the regional battle for power between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks or if they were coordinated.

It described the attackers as "terrorists" and said one carried out a suicide bombing, without providing further details.

State TV reported four attackers are involved in the parliament attack, and said eight people were wounded.

But Trump also says the USA grieves and prays for innocent victims and for the Iranian people. The Armenian Parliament resumed its session with a moment of silence, expressing solidarity to the people of Iran as terror attacks hit Tehran in the morning of June 7.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency says medics are treating the guard.

The U.S. has long considered Iran to be a sponsor of terrorism outside its borders, although Tehran has been active in the fight against the Sunni-dominated Islamic State, another stated priority of President Trump.

In addition to being lethal, the attack on the shrine of Khomeini is symbolically stunning.
