Death toll from Bangladesh landslides rises to 134 after heavy rain

Southeastern hilly districts of Chittagong, Bandarban and Rangamati are the worst affected districts, officials said, adding that the toll will rise further as many are still missing under tonnes of debris in southeastern hills.

British High Commissioner Alison Blake tweeted: "Condolences to the families for the precious lives lost in the landslides in Chittagong districts".

Golam Mostafa, a rescuer from the firefighting unit, said more than 100 people have been rescued after removing chunks of mud that buried many traditional homes owned by the poor tribal communities.

He said flood caused by the incessant rain inundated many areas of the Rangamati since Monday.

"We have not been able to reach numerous affected places".

Police chief in Chittagong, Rezaul Masud, said the death toll in his district climbed to 27 from 13 earlier. "Once the rains are over, we'll get a full picture of the damage and get the recovery work in full swing", he said.

"We've evacuated some of the affected villagers to schools and other safe places".

"Members of Bangladesh Army are engaged in rescue campaign in the areas but unfortunately four army personnel met the tragedy while on rescue operations", Shirin Sharmin was quoted by BSS as saying.

"The soldiers were sent to clear roads hit by a landslide in Manikchhari town when they were buried by a second landslide", armed forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Rashidul Hassan said.

Bangladesh experienced heavy downpour on Monday because of a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy monsoon rains also pounded the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong in the district of the same name, which recorded 222 millimetres (8.75 inches) of rain, disrupting traffic for hours.

Police and local authorities ordered the evacuation of thousands of people living in slums at the base of hills in the neighbouring district of Chittagong, where 30 people have been confirmed dead.

The landslides triggered by the monsoon rains came two weeks after Cyclone Mora hit Bangladesh, leaving eight people dead and damaging hundreds of homes.

Heavy rains triggered landslides that killed dozens in southeast Bangladesh, officials said Tue.

Ahmed said that there was no exact total of the missing in the three districts, but residents feared many people were still unaccounted for.
