Defending champ Garbine Muguruza survives Anett Kontaveit scare

After cruising past Francesca Schiavone in straight sets in round one, the Spaniard faced more of a challenge as she recovered from a set down to beat Anett Kontaveit 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-2 on Wednesday.

It was Muguruza that got the upper hand when they levelled at 4-4. Olivo converted the next one with a forehand crosscourt victor to prevail 6-4.

The Estonian broke Muguruza and consolidated to go 3-1 up, but Muguruza broke back later to force a tiebreaker.

Muguruza clinched her maiden grand slam title at Roland Garros in 2016, beating Serena Williams in the final.

In the men's draw, home favourite and 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was given only the briefest of reprieves as he lost 7-5 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 to Argentine Renzo Olivio.

The American, however, kept her cool and watched as Kvitova surrendered on match point with her ninth double fault.

"Everything wasn't ideal. There were a few concerns", Mladenovic said, before joking: "I made about 35 double-faults today, but everything's OK!" "I may not be the best tennis player".

Their match was suspended because of darkness on Tuesday with the 12th-seeded Frenchman trailing 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 5-4.

The 10th-seeded Williams, a runner-up in Paris in 2002, trailed 3-1 in the opening set but then won seven consecutive games.

"I mean, I am pleased".

"I have no idea what happened after I hit the forehand".

At 36 she is the oldest woman to reach the third round at the French Open since Billie Jean King in 1982. In addition, all eight women who play in the fourth round Monday are seeking a first major title, so it will be the first French Open since 1977 - and first major tournament anywhere since the 1979 Australian Open - without a past Slam champion among the quarterfinalists.

Williams found a seat in the shade at Court Philippe Chatrier during her older sister Venus' second-round match against Kurumi Nara on Wednesday. And as Muguruza walked to the locker room after her defeat, she wagged a finger toward the stands as if to say, "Tsk, tsk!"

Belgium's David Goffin is taken to medical care after falling in his match against Argentina's Horacio Zeballos during their third round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, in Paris, Franc. Parisian boys and girls will get the chance to see some of the game biggest stars this year, with Rafael Nadal later scheduled to resume his quest for a 10th title in Paris against Robin Haase.

The locals will also keep a close eye on 13th-seeded Kristina Mladenovic, a Frenchwoman who dealt with back pain and deficits before winning in the first round. She took her chances.
