Doctors remove 13kg of faeces from constipated man in China

The unnamed 22-year-old patient sought treatment at the 10th People's Hospital of Shanghai in eastern China after pain and swelling in his stomach had reached intolerable levels.

A man from China had almost 30 pounds of feces removed from his body after it became impacted in his colon and made it hard for him to breath.

Zhou went to a hospital in Shanghai where a CT scan showed he had a massive buildup of feces in his colon.

The recent operation, led by expert surgeon Dr. Yin Lu, helped remove what tests revealed to be years worth of feces trapped in his colon. While his parents didn't think much of the ailment, eventually it turned serious.

Doctors also learned that Zhou had been suffering from constipation since he was born and had been forced to use regular laxatives and enemas for his entire life. The section that was removed weighed more than 28 pounds and was nearly 30 inches long.

In a three-hour operation, surgeons removed a section of Zhou's colon that was 76cm long and weighed 13kg.

Zhou was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease, which can cause the large intestine to become blocked. The condition is a result of missing nerve cells in the muscles of the colon. It is usually diagnosed in children and is uncommon in adults. The disease is curable only through surgery.

Hirschsprung's disease can be treated via two types of surgery: ileostomy (removal of the entire colon and connecting the small intestine to the stoma) and colostomy (leaving a part of a colon and connecting it to the stoma).

Doctors compared his condition to a nine-month pregnancy because of the painful enlargement and feces backup, saying that it looked like "he was about to explode".

The patient is expected to make a stable recovery after surgeons took pictures with the excised mass weighing close to 30 pounds.
