DUP head arrives for talks with UK leader May

EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier met senior British Brexit official Oliver Robbins in Brussels to discuss arrangements such as dates and the sequencing of talks once they do actually get started.

After attending the Prime Minister's Cabinet meeting on Monday, Ms Davidson told BBC News: "I'm suggesting that the Conservative Party works with those both within the House of Commons and with people without to ensure that as we leave the European Union, we have a Brexit that works for the economy and puts that first".

Conservative chief whip Gavin Williamson flew to Belfast on Saturday to begin formal discussions with the DUP, the BBC reported.

"She acknowledged, and was asked and agreed, there was going to be a broader consensus in the party, listening to all the wings of the party on Brexit".

"Going overseas and being seen to be the prime minister and talking to the president of France... is a classic move to shore up authority at home", said Colin Talbot, professor of government at the University of Manchester.

The Tory loss has been attributed primarily to a weak campaign by Theresa May and her overconfidence.

The Conservatives held 330 seats in the last Parliament, compared with 229 for Labour, 54 for the Scottish National Party and nine for the Liberal Democrats. The Conservatives have 318 of 650 parliamentary seats, down from 330, and are seeking support from a small Northern Irish party, the Democratic Unionist Party, to support a minority government.

May tried to reassert her shattered authority at the weekend by announcing her new cabinet - with no changes among her top team.

How has the election panned out for the four main parties?

"Whoever it is, they are going to have to make deals with other political parties, and nearly every other political party that has an MP in the new parliament wants a softer version of Brexit", says French.

Pressed on the reports, Environment Secretary Michael Gove declined to deny it. The divorce issues include the rights of European Union citizens in Britain as well as United Kingdom citizens in the European Union, how much Britain will have to pay to cover previous spending commitments and the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said there had been "very good discussions" so far and she would travel to London to meet May on Tuesday.

Jeremy Corbyn could have been Britain's next Prime Minister - if it wasn't for the performance of the Conservatives in Scotland.

Moody's Investors Service said the inconclusive election outcome would complicate and "probably delay" negotiations with the EU.

"What the country needs more than ever is certainty", the Conservative leader said on Friday, as a political crisis brewed around her. "May would not have countenanced previously, and which would be positive".

The uncertainty has hit business confidence, according to a survey by the Institute of Directors (IoD). The Institute of Directors survey said company directors see no clear way to resolve the political situation quickly.

"The last thing business leaders need is a parliament in paralysis, and the consequences for British businesses and for the U.K.as an investment destination would be severe", said Stephen Martin, director general of the Institute of Directors business lobby.
