England (ENG) vs New Zealand

When the Kiwis were chasing Kane Williamson kept the game alive with his brilliance with the bat.

Fast bowler Liam Plunkett captured four wickets for 55 runs while pacer Jack Ball and leg-spinner Adil Rashid claimed two wickets each.

The whole team was bowled out for 223 runs in 44.3 overs and Australia emerged victorious with 33 balls to spare.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made a brilliant hundred against Australia before following up with 87 against England - a match where he was fined but not banned for a dreadfully slow over-rate.

Jake Ball bowled a tight spell of 31/2 in his eight overs to restrict New Zealand and the Kiwis' chances of qualifying for the semis now look very bleak.

The No.3 accumulated a solid fifty from 66 balls without ever dominating and was undone by a snorter from Mark Wood which bounced off his gloves to the keeper.

The result ensures England progress to the last four and means they can afford to lose their final Group A encounter with arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday (June 10). England lost Jason Roy early after batting first but a big stand between Alex Hales and Joe Root helped them rebuild the innings.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, could be facing a ban for slow over-rates after his side took nearly four hours to complete the England innings.

Jimmy Neesham hit a six off Plunkett but fell next ball when he found Hales in the deep.

"We want to win, to keep our momentum going no matter who we are playing, but it is nice to know that would be the outcome if we did win".

"We certainly learned a lot about the surface and obviously the conditions we're likely to face on Friday", he said.

The hosts will have to deal with the absence of fast bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes, who was ruled out of the tournament with an injury after bowling just two overs against Bangladesh.

Towards the end, Buttler ran out partners as Tim Southee (2/44) went through England's lower-order. Going into the game, England seem to hold the upper hand based on recent form and probable line-ups.

And when Taylor (39) holed out off Ball to midwicket, New Zealand were 168 for four in the 34th over.
