Former Detroit FBI Official Reacts to Comey Testimony

Trump's lawyer showed an equal devotion to dissembling.

The Trump-Russia story has always been compared to the Watergate scandal and reached a Nixonesque high point on Thursday during former FBI Director James Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Comey said a decision was made not report to Sessions a February 14 White House meeting where Trump pressed the director to drop the FBI's inquiry into Flynn, whom Trump fired for withholding information about his contacts with foreign governments.

Comey testified before that committee on Thursday, and Sen. "Given Attorney General Sessions's participation in President Trump's campaign, it was for that reason, and that reason alone, the attorney general made the decision on March 2, 2017 to recuse himself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for president of the United States", a Justice Department spokesman said in a statement. But let's review what is not in dispute.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with the Russian ambassador at least twice past year and then denied doing so in his confirmation hearings.

Comey, who was sacked by Trump in May, did not make any major disclosures about any links between Trump or his associates and alleged Russian meddling. Under questioning from Democratic Senators, he declined to answer "in open session" whether there were more unacknowledged meetings between Trump officials and Russian counterparts.

If either Trump's testimony or memos written by Comey about his conversations with the president turn out to be untrue, either man could be charged with lying to federal investigators. But I also agree this is a president that's steeped in New York City politics but not actually in how things actually function in the chain of command in Washington, D.C.

All of this yields a picture of a president who does not want all the facts known.

He's not the only one subjected to such requests.

Comey also said he'd taken careful notes of his meetings because he anxious the president might misrepresent them.

"I'm not hinting at anything", Trump said, but then he teased, "You'll be very disappointed".

The ex-director's statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether Trump's actions constituted obstruction of justice.

Mr Trump on Sunday accused Mr Comey of "cowardly" leaks and predicted many more from him.

Why would the president be so eager to see the investigation finished - as he has made clear he is? The simplest explanation is a fear it will find evidence of guilt. What else are they hiding? The Republican party controls both houses of congress, and a special counsel investigation into the Russian Federation affair is only in its infancy.

"Not for the first time, it appears that Comey took it upon himself to breach important norms governing the conduct of senior law enforcement officials-an offense that, perhaps ironically, would have unquestionably justified his termination, if he hadn't already been fired before doing it", he writes. Investigators and the public will have to decide whether they believe Trump, who lies all the time, or Comey, who has a flair for the dramatic but also the bearing of an oversized Boy Scout.
